Penn State parts ways with women’s basketball coach Carolyn Kieger after 7 seasons

Penn State women’s basketball will have a new head coach next season.

PSU is parting ways with head coach Carolyn Kieger after seven seasons, the program announced Thursday afternoon.

Kieger finishes her tenure with a record of 84-123 overall and a 30-97 record in Big Ten play in her seven seasons leading the program. She failed to make the NCAA Tournament during her tenure.

Penn State had one winning season during her tenure, going 22-13 in the 2023-2024 season with a 9-9 record in the Big Ten. She was hired by former AD Sandy Barbour in 2019 after making the NCAA Tournament in her final three seasons at Marquette, where she spent five years, but struggled to ever gain traction with the Nittany Lions.

Kieger succeeded Coquese Washington, who left her post after 12 seasons and ended up at Rutgers, which announced earlier this week that Washington’s coaching stint there was over.

Chicago Sky assistant coach Tanisha Wright, who played for the Nittany Lions from 2001-2005, is expected to be one of the candidates considered for the position, according to multiple sources.
