Prepare for Penn State’s White Out matchup against Minnesota with rosters, picks and top games
Penn State will look to rebound from the season’s first loss on Saturday under the lights and in front of a White Out crowd against Minnesota.
The Nittany Lions (5-1, 2-1) fell to Michigan last week, while the Golden Gophers (4-2, 1-2) have lost two in a row, first to Purdue and then Illinois last week.
Beyond whatever happens on the field, Saturday’s Homecoming game will stand out in a number of ways. It will be the 14th full-stadium White Out. Penn State is 7-6 in those games.
The 2012 team will be recognized after the first quarter. The 2022 team will wear “Generations of Greatness” uniforms, which include design elements from the past such as numbers on helmets, a stripe on the pants and gray facemasks.
It’s also a trophy game. The winning team gains possession of the Governor’s Victory Bell, which was established by acting Pennsylvania Gov. Mark Singel, on behalf of Gov. Robert Casey, and Minnesota Gov. Arne Carlson to mark Penn State’s first Big Ten game on Sept. 4, 1993. The Nittany Lions defeated the Gophers 38-20 at Beaver Stadium in their inaugural meeting.
Penn State leads the series 9-6, though the Gophers won the most recent matchup in 2019.
This is one of two trophy games for the Nittany Lions. The other is against Michigan State for the Land Grant Trophy.
Neither coach has much experience against his opponent. James Franklin is 1-1 against Minnesota, while P.J. Fleck is 1-0 against Penn State.
Saturday’s game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will air on ABC. Joe Tessitore will handle the play by play with analyst Greg McElroy and sideline reporter Katie George.
Temperatures will reach the mid- to upper 60s under sunny skies Saturday and fall into the 40s at night. AccuWeather recommends tailgaters use sunscreen and prepare for a “crisp fall evening” during the game.
