Penn State-Northwestern to open new Ryan Field, matchup moved to Friday night

Penn State will play a Big Ten game on a Friday night this season.

The Nittany Lions will play Northwestern on Oct. 2 at night in the new Ryan Field. The game was originally announced as an Oct. 3 kickoff. Kickoff time for the game will be announced at a later date.

The game will serve as the first game at Ryan Field, and will do so on the 100th anniversary of when the original Ryan Field opened in 1926.

The two teams faced off in 2025 in what was the final game of the James Franklin era, with Northwestern winning 22-21 on Oct. 11. Franklin was fired by Penn State the next day.

The Nittany Lions will open their season on Sept. 5 at home against Marshall and will open Big Ten play on Sept. 26 against Wisconsin in Beaver Stadium, which is in the midst of a renovation project set to cost up to $700 million and is to be completed prior to the start of the 2027 season.
