Terry Glunt retires after 18 years as Penns Valley’s boys’ basketball coach, and ‘remarkable’ success
The winningest coach in Penns Valley boys’ basketball history is retiring after 18 years of leading the program. The Rams announced Tuesday afternoon that Terry Glunt will step down as the team’s head coach.
Glunt finishes his coaching career with a 249-180 record and six of the school’s seven PIAA basketball tournament appearances to his name. He surpassed former coach Dave Edwards’ wins mark of 171 with a win over Bald Eagle Area in 2015.
The coach has a combined record of 507-259 in basketball and cross country, and will continue to coach the cross country team.
The school’s athletic director, Nate Althouse, called Glunt’s success “remarkable.”
“It is rare today to see such longevity in coaching and that is a testament to how successful he has been,” Althouse said in a press release. “His teams were always disciplined and methodical, with a focus on precision execution. The program has not had a losing regular season in almost a quarter of a century and a lot of that success can be attributed to Coach Glunt.”
Glunt led the team to a 2014 Mountain League title as well as the 2010 District 6 title. In 1992, he won the 1992 Centre County Coach of the Year, which was awarded by the Centre County Basketball Coaches’ Association.
His departure means four of the six county boys’ basketball programs will have new head coaches next year. Bellefonte has a vacant position after Kris Glunt left to take the Bald Eagle Area job that was vacated when longtime coach Bill Butterworth retired at the end of the season. Philipsburg-Osceola replaced Matt Curtis, who resigned to allow him to pursue career opportunities, with TJ Anderson from Juniata Valley.
The Rams join the Red Raiders as the two county teams with current boys’ basketball coach openings.
