Here’s what happened in Centre County high school sports from April 12-14.
baseball
BEA: Bald Eagle Area beat Tyrone 2-1 on Tuesday. The teams were tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh with one out, when Kahale Burns hit a walk-off double to right center to score Gavin Eckley from first base. Wyatt Coakley picked up the win, allowing one run and four hits, with a strikeout and two walks over seven innings.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte beat Williamsport 5-4 on Tuesday. The Red Raiders got out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Millionaires scored four runs in the bottom of the second to take the one-run lead. An RBI single off the bat of Zach Swagner tied things up in the third, and Nick Capparelle gave Bellefonte the lead for good with a single in the fourth. Max Rogers and Seth Shuey also had hits, while Swagner led the team in RBIs with two. Derek Fravel picked up the win for the Red Raiders, allowing seven hits and four runs over six and two-thirds innings, striking out five. Dylan Dann closed out the win.
State College: State College lost 9-1 to Cumberland Valley on Tuesday. Matt Lingenfelter and Ethan Schimony each had hits for the Little Lions. Garret Holzapfel had four strikeouts in the loss.
Penns Valley: Penns Valley lost 14-0 to Central in five innings on Tuesday. Mason Lieb and Ty Houtz each recorded hits for the Rams.
lacrosse
State College boys: State College beat Mechanicsburg 13-6 on Monday.
State College girls: State College beat Trinity 18-8 on Tuesday to improve to 4-1. Sydney O’Donnell led the Little Lions in scoring with five goals. Kaylee Schaeffer-Hood had three goals and an assist, while Lizzie Paterno, Ariana Angus, Caitlyn Keiter and Phebe Herlocher each added two goals, and Nicole Zeiler and Leah Moyer had one goal apiece. Angus and Anna Collins each had two assists. Grace Jones tallied six saves in goal.
State College boys: State College lost 11-3 to Trinity on Tuesday.
softball
Penns Valley: Penns Valley beat Mifflinburg 10-4 on Saturday. Kendra Bumgardner earned the win for the Rams, allowing two hits and four runs, with nine strikeouts, six walks and one hit batter over five innings. Penns Valley recorded two home runs in its 13-hit effort. Avelyn VanHeyst hit a grand slam and a double, knocking in four RBIs and a run scored. Avery Dinges had a home run, a double and a single, three runs scored, and RBI and a stolen base. Allie O’Brien also had three hits — all singles — to go with an RBI and a run scored.
Penns Valley vs. P-O: Despite being down by one heading into the bottom of the seventh, Penns Valley scored twice to beat Philipsburg-Osceola 7-6 on Tuesday. Kendra Bumgardner picked up the win, allowing one hit, one run and one hit batter over two innings pitched. Karissa Taylor took the loss, with three strikeouts, five walks and one hit batter. Allie O’Brien homered for the Rams. She also had a single, four runs scored, and RBI and a stolen base. Her teammate Jordan Anderson had a double and a team-high three RBIs.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte beat Clearfield 2-1 on Tuesday to improve to 4-1. The game was a pitcher’s duel between Bellefonte’s Lexi Rogers and Clearfield’s Emma Hipps. Both went the distance, with Rogers allowing four hits and one earned run and striking out 16, and Hipps gave up three hits and had 17 strikeouts. Tori Reichert hit the go-ahead home run in the sixth, then the Red Raiders’ defense took over to deliver the win.
BEA: Bald Eagle Area stopped an early rally from Central to roll to an 11-3 win on Tuesday. BEA got out to an early 3-0 lead, but Central tied things up in the top of the third. BEA responded with three runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a single by Mara Hockenberry, a double by Ava Stere and back-to-back singles by Madison Eckley and Autumn Tobias to put BEA on top, 6-3. The Eagles never looked back from there. Madison Peters earned the win.
boys’ tennis
State College: State College fell 5-0 to Palmyra on Monday, falling to 6-4 on the season. State College was swept in singles (P def. D. Xu (SC) 6-0, 6-0; P def. Davis(SC) 6-0, 6-0 and P def. Chong (SC) 6-1, 6-0) and in in doubles (P def. Labosky/Shaha(SC) 6-2, 6-4 and P def. Mostafa/Zhang(SC) 7-6(5) 5-7, 10-6).
Track & field
State College: State College hosted Mifflin County on Tuesday. The boys’ team won 107.5-42.5, and the girls’ won 92-57. Winning first place for the Little Lions were: Carson Franks (100-meter dash); Ryan Lindenberg (200-meter dash; 300-meter hurdles); Jonathon Mwangi (400-meter dash); Brady Bigger (800-meter run); Trent Dinant (3,200-meter run); John Sicree (110-meter hurdles); the boys’ 4x100-meter relay team; the boys’ 4x400-meter relay team; the boys’ 4x800-meter relay team; Conrad Moore (long jump); Ian Dorefice (pole vault); Mitchell Maher (discus; shot put); Shannon Mullin (100-meter dash; long jump; triple jump); Casie Eifrig (200-meter dash); Marlee Kwasnica (400-meter dash); Amy Devan (3,200-meter run); girls’ 4x100-meter relay team; girls’ 4x400-meter relay team; girls’ 4x800-meter relay team; Sarah Neely (pole vault); Victoria Lesher (discus) and Megan Yerka (shot put).
P-O vs. Bellefonte: Bellefonte boys’ track & field beat Philipsburg-Osceola 77-73, while the Lady Mounties topped the Lady Raiders 76-74. State College: State College lost 3-0 (25-18, 26-24 and 25-17) to Cumberland Valley on Monday. Brayden Kuruzovich had 10 assists, two aces, four digs and a kill for the Little Lions.
