Here’s what happened in Centre County high school sports from April 21-24.
BASEBALL
BEA: Bald Eagle Area defeated DuBois 16-6 through five innings in Wednesday’s home non-conference game. The Bald Eagles starting pitcher, Noah Williamson, was credited with the win and went 2-for-2 at the plate. Also getting hits for Bald Eagle Area was Alex Gavlock, Hayden Vaughn, McGwire Heverly and Kahale Burns. Although the Bald Eagles gave up three runs in the top of the first inning to the Beavers, they responded with six runs courtesy a grand slam from Vaughn and went on to score an additional 10 to end the game in the bottom of the fifth.
State College: State College lost 12- 0 in seven innings to Central Dauphin on Thursday in an away matchup. The Little Lions drop to 4-4 on the season.
Penns Valley: Penns Valley defeated Huntingdon 6-4 on Friday in an away game. Rams’ winning pitcher Connor Martz allowed no earned-runs and threw six strikeouts. Miles Brooks went 4-for-4 with three singles and a double, and Aidan Brinker and Rylee Brungart both batted 1-for-2 with a home run. Penns Valley improves to 4-4 on the season.
P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola lost 5-3 to Clearfield on Friday. The Mounties struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the first, but were unable to hang on for the win. Jeremy Whitehead was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Dave Meersand was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Jake DeSimone was 2-for-4.
BEA: Bald Eagle Area won 6-1 on Saturday against Southern Huntingdon in a home non-conference matchup. Winning pitcher, Dillon Barnyak only allowed three hits and no walks through all seven innings. The top Bald Eagles’ hitters were Myles Stover (2-for-4), Noah Williamson (2-for-3) and Hayden Vaughn (2-for-3). They move to 7-3 on the season.
Lacrosse
Sate College boys: State College boys’ lacrosse lost 9-5 to Northern York on Wednesday.
State College boys: State College boys’ lacrosse lost 16-4 to Cumberland Valley on Saturday to 3-3.
State College girls: State College girls’ lacrosse beat Selinsgrove 14-0 on Saturday to improve to 8-1. Leah Moyer led the offense with four goals.
SOFTBALL
Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s softball got its first win in program history on Thursday as it defeated Sugar Valley Rural Charter School, 12-10, in an away match. After a first-inning run courtesy a Jordyn Rose double, the WolfPack fell behind 5-1 through the first two innings. They fought back the next two innings, and found themselves with a 6-5 lead heading into the fifth. But the bottom of that frame saw the Lady Phoenix respond with five runs of their own, owning a 10-6 lead. Saint Joseph’s continued the back-and-forth affair into the sixth frame as Grace Rose and Jordan Rose each scored a run. It came down to the last at-bat for the WolfPack, and they exploded to score four runs in the seventh to command a 12-10 lead. Saint Joseph’s held on and starting pitcher Lizzie Weller earned the win. “By getting our first win in our first season is a testament to the tremendous commitment by the school administration at Saint Joseph’s toward the softball program,” head coach Bill Myers said. “It’s also a tribute to the hard work put into what we are trying to build here by the players and my assistant coaches. I am so happy for the players and really proud in the way they accomplished it. They never stopped fighting.”
State College: State College beat Central Dauphin 13-9 on Thursday. Olivia Herncane led the offense with four hits. Zia Bodnar picked up the win, throwing nine strikeouts over seven innings.
Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph lost 22-0 in four innings to Mount Union in a home non-conference game on Friday. The WolfPack droped to 1-5 on the season.
State College: State College went 2-1 at the Big Spring Tournament on Saturday. The Little Lions started the morning with a 6-0 shut out of West Perry. Logan Soltis had two hits and an RBI. Zia Bodnar picked up the win, allowing just two hits and no runs, striking out 15 over seven innings. State College then put away Greencastle-Antrim 15-9. Ava Babcock had two hits and four RBIs. Bodnar was again credited with the win, allowing 10 hits and five runs over four-and-one-third innings, striking out five. The Little Lions fell in their last game of the afternoon, 14-4 to Chambersburg. Soltis was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Bodnar took the loss with one strikeout.
Track & field
BEA vs. P-O: Both the Bald Eagle Area boys’ and girls’ track & field defeated Philipsburg-Osceola on Tuesday. Winning first place in the dual were: the girls’ 4x800-meter relay team of Anna Cingle, Rosalie Sowers, Alex Hacker and Falen McHenry; the boys’ 4x800-meter relay team of Tanner Bower, Nathaniel Spicer, Nate Fry and Camden Comly; Rachel Veneziano (100 hurdles; 100-meter dash; 300 hurdles); Max Yetsko (110 hurdles; 300 hurdles); Owen Irvin (100-meter dash; 200-meter dash; long jump); Falen McHenry (800-meter run); Alexis Frank (200-meter run); the girls’ 4x400-meter relay team of Jordan Frank, Alex Hacker, Falen McHenry and Rachel Veneziano; the boys’ 4x400-meter relay team of Kevin Taylor, Tanner Bower, Nathaniel Spicer and Max Yetsko; Angelina Grieb (high jump); Everett Herr (high jump); Sarah Holler (shot put); Matthew Knepp (shot put; discus); Abby Hoover (discus; javelin); Zeb Fry (javelin) and Kevin Taylor (pole vault).

boys’ volleyball
State College: State College boys’ volleyball beat Altoona in straight sets on Thursday, then went 0-2-1 at the Little Lions Invitational on Saturday. State College lost two sets to none against Hempfield (25-15 and 25-12) and Central York (25-19 and 25-22). The Little Lions then split with Senaca Valley (25-21 and 14-25).
Wrestling
UWW Cadet World Team Trials: Several Centre County wrestlers traveled to Wisconsin this weekend for Cadet World Team Trials. Bellefonte’s Jude Swisher made it to the semifinals in freestyle, before being dropped 10-0 by eventual champ Meyer Shapiro, and ended up placing fifth at 65 kg. State College freshman Pierson Manville placed seventh at the weight class. State College’s Nicholas Pavlechko finished eighth at 92 kg. Manville finished third at 65 kg in Greco-Roman.
NHSCA High School Nationals: Several Centre County wrestlers were in Virginia this weekend for NHSCA High School Nationals. Bellefonte’s Aidan O’Shea went 2-2 at 113 pounds and Bald Eagle Area’s Noah Foltz went 1-2 at 160 pounds in the junior bracket. State College’s Owen Woolcott finished seventh at 126 pounds in the senior bracket, going 6-2.
MAWA National Open: Several Centre County wrestlers were in Bloomsburg this weekend competing in the MAWA National Open. Philipsburg-Osceola’s Austin Foster won the 145-pound title in the Elite division, going 3-0 and beating Caleb Mantz, of York Springs, by a 9-1 major decision in the finals. Penns Valley’s Justin Darlington placed fourth in the Elite division at 135 pounds, going 2-2. In the Advanced division, Bald Eagle Area’s Lucas Fye was the runnerup at 110 pounds, going 2-1. Penns Valley’s Colten Shunk placed third at 110, falling 7-0 to Fye in the semifinals, for a 3-1 record. P-O’s Marcus Gable placed third at 140 in the Advanced Division, going 3-1.
