Mid-week HS roundup: Here’s what happened from April 26-28 in Centre County high school sports

Here’s what happened in Centre County high school sports from April 26-28.

Baseball

Bald Eagle Area: Bald Eagle Area beat Clearfield 8-3 on Monday to earn the season sweep over the Bison. The Eagles got out to an early lead in the first inning, thanks to a two-run home run from Kyler Cunningham, and never surrendered it. Ryan Kresovich went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Hayden Vaughn went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Wyatt McClain picked up the win, allowing seven hits, three runs and two walks, striking out four over six innings. Wyatt Coakley pitched the final inning.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley lost 7-1 to Southern Huntingdon on Monday to fall to 4-5 overall. Ty Houtz led Penns Valley’s offense, going 2-for-3 with two singles and an RBI.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 10-4 to Bellwood-Antis on Monday.

State College: State College lost 2-1 to Mifflin County on Tuesday. Each team had strong performances from the mound, with State College starter Garret Holzapfel giving up up four hits and no runs over six innings, striking out four and walking one. His counterpart, Mifflin County’s Connor Cherry, allowed one run on three hits, striking out eight over six innings. The game was won in the seventh inning, when Mifflin County scored twice. Matt Lingenfelter took the loss, surrendering two runs and one hit. Nate Polo led the Little Lions on offense, going 2-for-3.

P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola lost 4-1 to Tyrone on Tuesday. Ryan Whitehead recorded the sole hit for the Mounties. Whitehead took the loss, allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out eight over 6.2 innings. Gavin Emigh finished out the game on the mound.

Lacrosse

Bellefonte boys: Bellefonte beat Danville 12-11 on Monday to improve to 3-3- on the season. Seth Chapman led the offense with seven goals — including the tying and go-ahead goals. Gabe Moyer and Shea Chapman each had a pair of goals and Harrison Herr added one.

State College boys: State College beat Central Dauphin East 13-3 on Monday. Matt O’Donnell and Rocco Brugel each had five goals to lead the Little Lions in scoring.

State College girls: State College beat Central Dauphin 14-6 on Tuesday to improve to 9-1. Leah Moyer had three goals, one assist and four draw controls. Sydney O’Donnell had one goal, two assists and five draw controls, while Lizzie Paterno had two goals and four draw controls. Also scoring multiple goals were Ariana Angus and Kaylee Schaefer-Hood each with three. Grace Jones had three saves.

State College boys: State College lost 10-3 to Central Dauphin on Tuesday. Christian Crabtree scored all three goals for the Little Lions.

Softball

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 25-6 to Bucktail on Monday.

BEA: Bald Eagle Area rolled to an 18-0 win over Bellwood-Antis on Monday in three innings. Madison Peters struck out five batters, gave up no hits and was one walk away from a perfect game. The Eagles racked up 12 hits in the game. Mara Hockenberry was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs, Ava Steere was 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs and Katelyn Smitchko was 2-for-2 with a three-run home run, three RBIs and three runs.

Bellefonte: Bellefonte beat Huntingdon 11-0 on Tuesday. Lexi Rogers pitched a no-hitter, striking out 20 and walking one over seven innings. The Red Raiders tallied 18 hits in the victory. Hanna Lauck went 4-for-5 with one run and three RBIs, and Rogers went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

State College: State College lost 10-0 to Mifflin County on Tuesday. The Little Lions were unable to record a hit in the contest. Carsyn Spencer took the loss, allowing five hits and seven runs over 1-and-one-third innings, striking out two. Sophomore Julie Breon finished out the game, with three strikeouts.

Track & field

Bellefonte: The Bellefonte boys’ track and field team beat Central Mountain 87-63 and lost 111-39 to Altoona on Tuesday, while the girls’ team lost 105-45 to Altoona and 104-46 to Central Mountain. Winning first place overall were: Kerri Shutika (200-meter dash); Mia Elmore (1,600-meter run); Ashleigh Aukerman (3,200-meter run) and William Brininger (javelin).

State College: State College hosted Cumberland Valley on Tuesday. The boys’ team fell 88-62 and the girls’ lost 86-64. A highlight for the Little Lions was Conrad Moore breaking his own school record in the high jump with a clearance of 6-10. Finishing in first place were: Eniayo Ogunranti (100-meter dash; 200-meter dash); Brady Bigger (800-meter run); Bennett Norton (1,600-meter run); the boys’ 4x800-meter relay team; Moore (high jump); Ian Dorefice (pole vault); Grace Morningstar (800-meter run); Jordan Reed (1,600-meter run); Amy Devan (3,200-meter run); the girls’ 4x800-meter relay team; Shannon Mullin (long jump; triple jump) and Caroline Simon (shot put).

Boys’ volleyball

State College: State College beat Chambersburg in four sets (25-20,21-25,27-25 and 25-23) on Tuesday.
