Here’s what happened in Centre County high school sports from May 17-18.

baseball

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy split a doubleheader with Huntingdon on Saturday, winning the first game 6-5 and losing the second 10-0.

BEA vs. P-O: Bald Eagle Area shut out Philipsburg-Osceola 7-0 on Monday. Wyatt McClain was credited with the win, surrendering three hits and no runs over four innings, while walking two and striking out two. Dillon Barnyak and Noah Williamson also put in time at the pitcher’s mound. Myles Stover went 3-for-4 for the Eagles, Alex Gavlock was 2-for-2, Williamson went 2-for-3 with a double, and Hayden Vaughn hit a home run. Dave Meersand took the loss for the Mounties.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley beat Mount Union 4-3 on Monday to finish the season 6-12. Mason Lieb pitched a complete game for the win, surrendering five hits and three runs, while walking one and striking out 15. Aidan Brinker went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Owen Miller was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Bellefonte: Bellefonte defeated Mifflin County 6-3 on Tuesday. Seth Shuey pitched four innings for the Red Raiders, surrendering two hits and two runs while striking out six. Derek Fravel was credited with the win, allowing two hits and a run while striking out six and walking three over three innings. Max Rogers went 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead the offense.

lacrosse

State College boys’: State College lost 9-8 to Ephrata in front of a White-Out crowd at Memorial Field on Monday in the first round of the District 3 Class 3A playoffs. Christian Crabtree led the offense with four goals, while Leo Vandevort added two and Rocco Brugel had one.

Bellefonte girls’: Bellefonte lost 13-4 to Lewisburg on Tuesday.

Softball

BEA vs. Bellefonte: Bald Eagle Area completed its season sweep of rival Bellefonte on Monday with another 1-run victory, winning 4-3 to capture the regular season Mountain League title. Madison Peters earned the win for the Eagles, allowing seven hits and three runs over seven innings, striking out nine and walking one. Lexi Rogers took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out six over six innings. Ava Stere went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Eagles, while Rogers was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Tori Reichert added two more RBIs for the Red Raiders.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley beat Brookville 7-1 on Monday. Allie O’Brien earned the win, surrendering five hits and a run over seven innings, with 14 strikeouts and two walks. Ellie Coursen went 3-for-4 with three singles and three RBIs to lead the offense.

Bellefonte: Bellefonte beat Huntingdon 10-1 on Tuesday to end its regular season. Lexi Rogers was the winning pitcher, allowing zero hits and zero runs over four innings, striking out eight. Josselyn Nau threw three innings in relief. Rogers hit two home runs, while Hanna Lauck, Maddie Tice and Sara DeHaas also went yard. Tice and DeHaas led the team in hits with three apiece, while Rogers had a game-high four RBIs.

State College: State College beat Tyrone 3-1 on Tuesday. The game was tied at 1 after the first inning until Logan Soltis homered in the top of the seventh to score two runs. Ava Bierly scored the first run for the Little Lions, knocking in Olivia McTavish on a single. Zia Bodnar earned the win, surrendering three runs on five hits over seven innings, striking out seven. Molly LaMotte threw an inning in relief.

P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola lost an 18-17 slugfest against Huntingdon on Tuesday.

boys’ volleyball

State College: State College swept Altoona (25-14, 25-14 and 26-24) to win the District 6 Class 3A title on Tuesday. This marked State College’s third win over Altoona this season.

Track & field

Penns Valley: Penns Valley’s girls’ team placed second with 65.5 points on Tuesday at the District 6 Class 2A Track and Field Championships in Altoona, while the boys’ team finished fifth with 58 points. The Rams captured three gold medals: Colton Sands in the 800m and 1,600m and Anna Stitzer in the 3,200m, while also qualifying six more: Brendan Colwell (second in the 800m and 1,600m), Kelsey Hull (third in the 1,600m), Thad Smith (second in the 3,200), Leah Beben (second in the high jump and triple jump), Cameron Upcraft (third in high jump) and Colin Niewinski (third in javelin) for states next week. Also earning spots on the podium were: Jadyn Butler (fifth in 100 hurdles finals); Abigail Stitzer (fourth in the 800m and fifth in the 400m); Alexis Durn (seventh in the 1,600m and seventh in the 3,200m); Daniel Kelly (fourth in the 3,200m); the boys’ 4x400m relay (sixth) and the girls’ 4x800m relay (sixth).

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s girls’ team placed eighth with 40 points on Tuesday at the District 6 Class 2A Track and Field Championships in Altoona, while the boys’ team was ninth with 25 points. The WolfPack won four gold medals: Clare Marsh in the 100m and 300m hurdles, Kathleen Simander in the 800m and the girls’ 4x400m relay, while also qualifying two more: Jonah Clark (third in the 800m) and the boys’ 4x400m relay (second) for states next week. Also earning spots on the podium were: Brendan Scanlon (sixth in the 800m); Colin Simander (seventh in the 1,600m and eighth in the 3,200m) and the boys’ 4x400m relay (fourth).

BEA: Bald Eagle Area’s girls’ team placed 11th with 24.5 points on Tuesday at the District 6 Class 2A Track and Field Championships in Altoona, while the boys’ team placed 14th with 13 points. Owen Irvin placed third in the triple jump and Sarah Holler placed fourth in shot put with a state standard distance to both qualify for the PIAA championships next week. Also earning spots on the podium were: Rachel Veneziano (fifth in the 300 hurdles); Falen McHenry (eighth in the 400m); Holler (fifth in discus); Abigail Hoover (sixth in discus and fourth in javelin); Zeb Fry (fourth in javelin); Heather Leskovansky (sixth in pole vault) and the boys’ 4x800m relay (seventh).

P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola’s boys’ team finished 15th with 14.5 points on Tuesday at the District 6 Class 2A Track and Field Championships in Altoona, while the girls’ finished in 27th place with two points. Making it onto the podium were: Braydon Little (eighth in the 200m and sixth in the 400m); Chad Muckey (fourth in the 1,600m); Will Rishel (fifth in high jump); Matthew McClenahan (seventh in long jump); Starcia Bainey (eighth in triple jump) and the girls’ 4x800m relay (eighth).
