Here’s what happened in Centre County high school sports from May 19-22.
baseball
Saint Joe’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 5-2 to Juniata Valley in the first round of the District 6 Class 1A playoffs on Thursday. The WolfPack led 2-0 in the sixth inning but gave up five unanswered runs to close out the game. They end their season with a 5-10 record.
P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola lost 5-2 to Tyrone in the first round of the District 6 Class 3A playoffs on Thursday. The Mounties took a 2-0 lead, but Tyrone scored five unanswered runs for the win. Ryan Whitehead allowed two hits and five runs over six innings, while striking out seven and walking one. Nathan Gustkey went 1-for-3 with a run scored. P-O ends its season with an 8-9 record.
BEA: Bald Eagle Area fell 2-0 to Forest Hills in the first round of the District 6 Class 3A playoffs on Thursday. The two teams were scoreless until the Rangers took a 2-0 lead in the sixth. Noah Williamson gave up four hits and no walks and had three strikeouts in the loss, and had a double and a walk at the plate. McGwire Heverly had a double and single. The Eagles end their season at 13-6.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte lost 5-2 to Clearfield on Thursday. Bellefonte got on the board first when Seth Shuey singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run in the first inning. Clearfield then blew the game open with four runs in the third inning. Bobby Marsh took the loss, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out one over two and a third innings. The Raiders out-hit Clearfield 10-7. Nick Capparelle and Max Rogers each went 2-for-4.
softball
Bellefonte: Bellefonte beat Hollidaysburg 9-2 in the first round of the District 6 Class 5A playoffs on Thursday. Lexi Rogers was credited with the win, allowing one earned run while striking out eight and walking three over seven innings. Rogers and Madison Melius both hit home runs. Rogers went 2-for-3 for three RBIs, a walk and a run scored, while Melius went 2-for-3 as well with two RBIs and two runs scored. The Raiders next play Central Mountain for the PIAA District 6 Class 5A title on Monday at St. Francis University.
P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola beat Punxsutawney 6-4 in extra innings on Thursday. London Cutler had the game-winning hit and Paige Jarret added an insurance run. Abby Vaux pitched six innings and Karissa Taylor closed it out.
Track & field
State College: State College’s boys’ team placed first with 216.5 points on Thursday at the District 6 Class 3A Track and Field Championships in Altoona. Altoona was second with 182.5. State College’s girls’ team placed second, with 182 points to first-place Altoona’s 182.5. Between both teams, the Little Lions captured 18 gold medals: the boys’ 4x100m relay; the boys’ 4x400m relay; the boys’ 4x800m relay; the girls’ 4x800m relay; Eniayo Ogunranti in the 100m and 200m dashes; Ryan Lindenberg in the 300m hurdles; Casie Eifrig in the 400m; Brady Bigger in the 800m and 1,600m; Grace Morningstar in the 800m; Marlee Kwasnica in the 1,600m; Jordan Reed in the 3,200m; Victoria Lesher in discus; Conrad Moore in high jump; Shannon Mullin in long jump; Ian Dorefice in pole vault and Mia Iceland in pole vault. Also qualifying for the PIAA championships in Shippensburg on Friday were: Carson Franks (second in the 100m and 200m); John Sicree (third in 110m hurdles); Nolan Markowski (third in the 200m); Natalie Koncoski (second in the 800m); Abigail Bigger (third in the 800m); Sean Adams (second in the 800m); Bennett Norton (third in the 800m); Trent Dinant (second in the 1,600m); Karsyn Kane (second in the 1,600m); Maya Ikenberry (third in the 1,600m); Charles Endres (second in the 3,200m); Trent Dinant (third in the 3,200m); Amy Devan (third in the 3,200); Mitchell Maher (second in discus); Victoria Sodeinde (second in pole vault); Sarah Neely (third in pole vault); the girls’ 4x100m relay (third) and the girls’ 4x400m relay (second). Also earning spots on the podium were: Halle Rager (eighth in the 100m and sixth in the 100m hurdles); Lucca Capparelli (seventh in the 100m); Reese Steidle (fourth in the 110m hurdles and eighth in the 300m hurdles); Casie Eifrig (seventh in the 200m); John Sicree (fifth in the 300m hurdles); Reese Kramer (sixth in the 300m hurdles); Tanae Hardy (sixth in the 400m); Elizabeth Curtin (eighth in the 400m); Mathew Staniar (fifth in the 400m); Nick Sloff (fifth in the 1,600); Ava Langelaan (sixth in the 3,200m); Ben Spencer (fifth in discus and sixth in javelin); Victoria Lesher (seventh in javelin and seventh in shot put); Alex Antoniono (fifth in long jump and fifth in triple jump); Landon Leidy (fifth in long jump); Sam Bell (sixth in pole vault); Caroline Simon (fifth in shot put) and Duncan Loviscky (sixth in triple jump).
Bellefonte: Bellefonte’s boys’ team finished seventh with 33 points on Thursday at the District 6 Class 3A Track and Field Championships in Altoona, while the girls’ team also finished seventh, with 24 points. Qualifying for Friday’s PIAA championships were: Ella Underwood (third in javelin), William Brininger (third in javelin) and John Besch (third in shot put). Also making it onto the podium were: Logan Naspinski (seventh in the 110m hurdles and sixth in the 300m hurdles); Kathryn Gearhart (seventh in the 300m hurdles); Amber Corl (eighth in the 300m hurdles); Austin Melius (fifth in the 800m); Mia Elmore (sixth in the 1,600m and seventh in the 3,200m); Chase Ebeling (seventh in the 1,600m and seventh in the 3,200m); the girls’ 4x100m relay (sixth); the boys’ 4x100m relay (sixth); the girls’ 4x400m relay (sixth); the boys’ 4x400m relay (fourth) and the girls’ 4x800m relay (fifth).

State College: State College fell in three sets (25-16, 25-11 and 25-15) to Northeastern on Thursday in the District 3 playoffs to end their season.
