HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Aug. 19-28 in Centre County high school sports

After the summer hiatus, high school sports are back in Centre County.

The fall sports season kicked off with State College, Bellefonte, Philipsburg-Osceola and Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy golfers competing in the Happy Valley Invitational on Aug. 19.

After placing second individually at that tournament, Saint Joseph’s junior Tim Peters has quickly established himself as an athlete to watch this season. State College’s girls tennis team has also gotten off to a hot start this week.

Here are some of the highlights of Week 1:

Happy Valley Invitational (boys): State College, Bellefonte, Philipsburg-Osceola and Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy competed in the Happy Valley Invitational at Penn State’s Blue Course on Aug. 19. State College 1 tied for third in the Class 3A division with a score of 229. Bellefonte came in fifth (235), State College 2 in seventh (247) and State College 3 in ninth (250). Saint Joseph’s finished second in Class 2A competition with a score of 250, and P-O was fifth with 293. In individual competition, Saint Joseph’s Tim Peters led the way for Centre County teams, tying for second with a score of 72 (par). State College’s Luke Janac and John Olsen and Bellefonte’s Keith Hamilton tied for 10th with 76, while State College’s Joey Sabol wasn’t far off with 77. Also finishing in the top 15 were State College’s Leighton Smithwick (78), State College’s Tanner Mona (79) and State College’s Max Wager (79). “Tim (Peters) put in a lot of work this summer and that showed today, coming in second in a field of 80+ competitors,” Saint Joseph’s coach Chad Walsh said. “The coaching staff has no doubt that he will have an outstanding junior year, and will display the grind that this young team can emulate toward their own success.”

Happy Valley Invitational (girls): State College, Bellefonte and Philipsburg-Osceola competed in the Happy Valley Invitational at Penn State’s Blue Course on Aug. 19. State College finished seventh in Class 3A team competition, with a score of 305, and Bellefonte was 11th with 345. P-O finished second (375) out of two teams in Class 2A. The top individual finishers for Centre County teams were Bellefonte’s Riley Clute (92, (+20)) and State College’s Amber Kissinger (93, (+21)).

SJCA: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s boys golf team came in third, with a score of 391, in a quad-meet with East Juniata, Millersburg and Newport on Monday at Mountain View Country Club in Boalsburg. Millersburg took first with a team score of 350. Saint Joseph’s Tim Peters was the only golfer to break 80, shooting the low score of 73.

SJCA: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s boys golf team lost 318-387 to Altoona on Tuesday. Junior captain Tim Peters led all golfers, shooting a 70 (-2).

Mountain League meet (girls): Philipsburg-Osceola took second at a Mountain League meet with Hollidaysburg and Clearfield on Wednesday at Scotch Valley Country Club. Hollidaysburg was first with 147, P-O scored 177 and Clearfield was third with 209. Bellefonte and Penns Valley also had golfer compete, but not enough for team scores. Leaders for P-O were Abby Vaux (55), Camden Potter (58) and Olivia Hutton (64). Hollidaysburg’s Emma Kennedy was the medalist, shooting 47.

SJCA: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy shot its lowest team score of the season on Thursday, beating Sugar Valley Rural Charter School 331-396 on the road. Tim Peters shot a 74 to place first overall. Peters has now finished first in every match after starting the season with a second-place finish at the Happy Valley Invitational. Saint Joseph’s senior Dmitri Cornali finished second with 78, followed by freshman Chris Warner with 88, and junior Juneon Park (91) in his varsity debut. Freshman Jake Nichols also made his debut. The WolfPack improved to 2-4.

Mountain League meet (boys): Golfers from Bellefonte, Philipsburg-Osceola, Penns Valley and Bald Eagle Area participated in a Mountain League meet at Clearfield-Curwensville Country Club on Thursday. Bellefonte shot the low team score with 356, edging Hollidaysburg and Tyrone by three shots. P-O totaled 389 and Penns Valley scored 485. Bellefonte’s Isaac Bloom led Centre County golfers with 85, four points behind the first-place winners. Keith Hamilton shot an 88 for the Raiders, while Evan Braughler had 91 and Davis Corman 92. P-O was led by Oliver Harpster, who shot a 93, and Penns Valley was led by Calvin Grenoble’s 103. BEA’s Noah Foltz and Jeffre Pifer also participated.

Commonwealth League match (boys): State College placed second out of six teams at a Commonwealth League match on Thursday in Hershey with a score of 308 (+24). Central Dauphin took first with a team score of 293. John Olsen led State College, tying for second in the individual rankings, shooting a 72 (+1). Luke Janac shot a 74 to tie for fifth and AJ Corson was 10th with a score of 78.

State College: State College tennis got its season off to a hot start on Thursday, taking down Red Land 5-0 at home. Winners in singles were: Quiana Guo(SC) def. R 6-0, 6-1; Kelly Steel(SC) def. R 6-0, 6-2 and Madeline Miller(SC) def. R 6-1, 6-0. Doubles winners were: Emily Zhang/Allsion Norloff(SC) def. R 6-0, 6-2 and Marissa Xu/Jordan Dye 6-0, 6-0.
