HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Sept. 20-25 in Centre County high school sports

Boys golf began postseason competition this week, with the District 6 Class 2A and 3A sectional tournaments. Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s Tim Peters placed first in Class 2A with a low score of 67 (-5), while State College’s Max Wager was first in Class 3A with 75. The WolfPack and Little Lions will also both be moving on as teams to the district championships, along with a handful of other county golfers.

Cross country runners from Penns Valley, Saint Joseph’s, Bellefonte and State College got a taste of the state championship course at Hershey and state-level competition at the 15th Annual PIAA Foundation Meet on Saturday. Penns Valley’s Anna Stitzer, Saint Joseph’s Amber Fisher and State College’s Trent Dinant all placed in the top 10 of their respective divisions.

Here are some of the highlights of Week 5:

Cross country

Bellefonte: Bellefonte swept Tyrone on Tuesday, with its boys team winning 17-46 and girls team winning 15-50. Placing first for the boys was Chase Ebeling in 18:29, followed by Alex Crist in second in 19:03 and Aaron Carelini in third in 20:11. Rounding out the scorers for Bellefotne were Eric Bennett (fifth in 20:50) and Danny Mussett (20:58). In the girls race, an initial mishap caused the athletes to run 2.43 miles instead of a 5K. Bellefonte’s Ashleigh Aukerman placed second in 20:01. Katie Gearhart was fourth in 20:09, Alexis Fravel was fifth in 21:09, Josie Underwood was sixth in 22:53, and Kate Rarrick was seventh in 23:07.

State College (girls): State College came out with two wins, over Mifflin County and Central Dauphin, in a tri-meet Tuesday in Reedsville. The Little Lions beat both teams with scores of 15-50, improving to 2-2 on the season. State College junior Marlee Kwasnica led the race wire to wire, finishing first in 19:35. She was followed by teammates Amy Devan and Natalie Koncoski, who placed second and third, respectively, with times of 20:52 and 20:53. Chloe Poindexter was fourth in 21:05 and Grace Morningstar rounded out the top five in 21:07.

P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola swept its Senior Day meet with Clearfield on Tuesday. The boys won 21-35 and the girls 24-37. P-O’s Chad Muckey placed first in 18:47, followed by Scott Frantz (second in 20:33), Sean Meyers (fourth in 24:21), Braeden Fenten (sixth in 24:55) and Grant Lutz (eighth in 25:27). On the girls side, Jaylee Cook finished second in 25:25 to lead the Mounties. Evie Raker was fourth in 27:13, Kylie Timko was fifth in 27:27, Manna Potter was sixth in 27:52, and Sarah Beck was seventh in 27:53.

Philipsburg-Osceola and Clearfield cross country honored their seniors during their Tuesday meet. Clearfield seniors are David Graham, Ben Leighow, Wyatt Reorda,and Tyler Olson. P-O seniors are Ben Meyers, Scott Frantz, Braeden Fenton, Heather Wayland, Reilly Vroman, Kylie Timko, Audrey Smith and Ruby Pinto. Penns Valley: Penns Valley competed against Hollidaysburg, Bald Eagle Area, Portage and Grier at a Tuesday meet in Hollidaysburg. The girls team defeated BEA by forfeit, Hollidaysburg by a score of 20-35, Grier 17-19, and fell 33-23 to Portage. The Rams are now 5-1 on the season and remain undefeated in the Mountain League. Penns Valley’s Anna Stitzer won the race with a new course record of 19:14, while Abby Stitzer was fifth in 21:47, Ann-Marie McMurtrie was 12th in 26:10, and Ayva Fetterolf was 13th in 27:30. The boys team defeated BEA 19-36, and lost 45-36 to Hollidaysburg and 29-26 to Portage, bringing its record to 1-5. McClain Reamer was 4th in 19:13 for the Rams, while Vince Smith was 14th in 21:38, Simon Smith was 16th in 22:09, Dilon Reilly was 20th in 23:49, and Matthew Wheeland was 24th in 25:10. “We were very pleased with today’s results as we were running one girl short due to an injury. Anna had a remarkable performance against some stiff competition,” said coach Lynda Federinko. “McClain continues to lead the team and is running comfortably. We finally have a full team and we now need to work on improving their conditioning and health.”

BEA: Bald Eagle Area’s lone varsity runner Colton Wagner ran a 20:21 to finish in 10th place a meet with Hollidaysburg, Penns Valley and Portage on Tuesday. Heidi Eveleth finished in 10th place in the girls division of the junior high race with a 15:20.

Anna Stitzer finished third in 20:40 to lead the Rams. Ayva Fetterolf was 104th in 26:47 and Ann-Marie McMurtrie was 127th in 27:54. Due to illness and injury, Penns Valley did not have enough runners for a team score. On the boys side, McClain Reamer was 52nd in 19:58. Vince Smith was 122nd in 22:02 and Dilon Reilly was 150th in 23:47. “For many of the athletes, this was their first experience on the course that will be used later in the season for the state championships,” coach Lynda Federinko said. “It is a very challenging course and the athletes rose to the occasion. Anna continues to run strong and she ran a remarkable race against some of the finest competition the state has to offer.”

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy competed in the Class 1A division at 15th Annual PIAA Foundation Meet at the Giant Center in Hershey on Saturday. The girls team finished in sixth place out of 22 teams with 217. Amber Fisher cracked the top 10 by finishing ninth in 21:45. Evelyn Reynolds was 33rd in 23:14, Kita Chappell 34th in 23:17, Brandi Carmack 36th in 23:30, Abby Ridenour 105th in 27:49 and Esther Clark 131st in 31:30. Saint Joseph’s finished 16th out of 25 teams on the boys side with 419. Asa Reynolds led the boys, finishing 34th in 19:33. He was followed by Colin Simander, who finished 35th in 19:33. Josh Hyman was 44th in 19:54, Anthony Woomer was 148th in 25:54 and Cade Behrer was 158th in 30:08.

Bellefonte: Bellefonte competed in the Class 2A division at 15th Annual PIAA Foundation Meet at the Giant Center in Hershey on Saturday. The boys team finished 13th of 29 teams with 424. Chase Ebeling led the Raiders, finishing 30th in 18:03. Alexander Crist was 45th in 18:36, Aaron Carlini 95th in 19:56, Eric Bennett 108th in 20:10, Caleb Vinnedge 146th in 20:52, Dillon Sette 151st in 21:04, and Daniel Mussett 170th in 21:38. Bellefonte finished in 24th on the girls side with 705. Ashleigh Aukerman led the Raiders on the girls side, finishing in 119th in 25:41, Haley Herrwas 135th in 26:45, Kate Rarrick was 147th in 28:17, Josie Underwood was 151st in 28:46, Alexis Fravel was 153rd in 29:23, and Rebecca Burns was 159th in 32:09.

State College: State College competed in the Class 3A division at 15th Annual PIAA Foundation Meet at the Giant Center in Hershey on Saturday. The girls finished in third place out of 34 teams with 193. Marlee Kwasnica finished 14th in 20:22 to lead the Little Lions. Natalie Koncoski was 31st in 20:53, Amy Devan was 43rd in 21:19, Chloe Poindexter was 48th in 21:30, Grace Morningstar was 57th in 21:41, Maya Ikenberry was 81st in 22:10, Abigail Bigger was 88th in 22:17. The boys finished fourth out of 34 teams with 207. Trent Dinant finished 10th in 16:58. Charles Endres was 18th in 17:04, Nick Sloff was 35th in 17:23, Tony Tzolov was 48th in 17:48, Griffin Selber was 96th in 18:50, Samuel Endres was 123rd in 19:11 and Ethan Morningstar was 162nd in 19:52. “Today was a solid day for us,” girls coach Rebecca Donaghue said. “The competition was top notch and included many of the teams we could face at the state meet, so it was a good chance to see where we stack up at this point in the season. This is a very challenging course and for 4 of our top 7 it was the first time they had ever raced on it. They handled the hills well, competed hard, and closed strong in the second half of the race to secure third place, beating a number of teams ranked ahead of us. We have a lot of room to grow and areas to improve on which makes looking ahead very exciting.”

Field hockey

State College: State College lost 3-0 to Central Dauphin on Wednesday. Maya Williams scored all three goals for CD. State College earned five penalty corners to CD’s 1, while CD out-shot the Little Lions 9-7. Molly Schreiner made six saves for State College.

Golf

State College (boys): State College placed second as a team with 325 points, behind Central Dauphin’s 320, at a Commonwealth League match at Chambersburg on Wednesday. State College’s John Olsen finished second with 77 (+5). Luke Janac was third (79), Thomas Hay tied for eighth with 83 and Joey Sabol tied for 10th with 84.

Boys 2A sectional: Centre County had three golfers and one team advance from the District 6 Boys 2A Golf Sectional on Thursday to next week’s district championship meet. Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s Tim Peters was the medalist, shooting a career low of 67 (-5) at Windber Country Club. Saint Joseph’s Dmitri Cornali and Philipsburg-Osceola’s Oliver Harpster each shot and 87 to tie for 30th and advance. Saint Joseph’s also advanced as a team, with a score of 331. Saint Joseph’s team consists of Peters, Cornali, Chris Warner and Juneon Park.

Boys 3A sectional: Centre County had seven golfers and one team advance from District 6 Boys 3A Golf Sectional on Thursday to next week’s district championship meet. State College’s Max Wager was the medalist, shooting a low score of 75. Also advancing were State College’s John Olsen (78), Bellefonte’s Isaak Bloom (79), State College’s AJ Corson (79), State College’s Luke Janac (79), Bellefonte’s Keith Hamilton (80), and Bellefonte’s Davis Corman (81). State College also advanced as a team, with a score of 314. State College’s team consists of Olsen, Janac, Wager, Joey Sabol and Thomas Hay.

Soccer

Penns Valley vs. P-O (girls): Penns Valley beat Philipsburg-Osceola 4-2 on Monday. Goals came from: Penns Valley’s Scotty Dinges (assisted by Ceci Falls) at 13:33; P-O’s Madison Vaughn at 15:50; Penns Valley’s Dinges at 22:14; Penns Valley’s Cate Goodwin (assisted by Marinn Peters) at 25:17; Penns Valley’s Dinges at 50:18, and P-O’s Lily Warlow (penalty kick) at 56:55. Pens Valley edged P-O in shots, 15-14. Paige Rishel had 9 saves for the Mounties, while Noelle Webb had eight for the Rams. Penns Valley moves to 3-3 on the season (2-3 in league play), while P-O fell to 1-4 overall and in league play. “Today was a game that could have had several different scorelines. We were able to capitalize on a few more chances but it was a close even game,” Penns Valley coach Andrew Beverly said. “We have to continue to work on making things as hard as we can for the other team defensively but the team has responded well to some adversity with injuries and we hope to keep the momentum going into our next game.”

Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte lost 8-0 to Clearfield on Monday. Keira Whitman made 12 saves in the loss.

Penns Valley vs. P-O (boys): Philipsburg-Osceola topped Penns Valley 2-0 on Tuesday. Ashton Crownover scored both goals, with an assist from Carson Long. Greg Holt had three saves from the Mounties.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy beat Mount Union 5-1 on Monday. Goals came from Chris Forstmeir (2), Luke Surovec (2) and Sam Yangula (1), who each also had an assist.

BEA (girls): Bald Eagle Area fell 2-0 to Hollidaysburg on Tuesday. Mackenzie Vozniak had 10 saves in goal. “Mackenzie kept us in the match making some really great saves,” coach Jared Moore said.

State College (boys): State College beat Red Land 5-1 on Tuesday.

Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte blanked Clearfield 4-0 on Tuesday. Scoring for the Raiders were Hayden Walker (2), AJ Packer and Quinn Tooker. The Raiders out-shot the Bison 16-6.

BEA (girls): Bald Eagle Area lost 3-1 to Tyrone on Wednesday. Falen McHenry scored the lone goal for the Eagles, off an assist from Abby Hoover. Both teams tallied nine shots, and Bald Eagle goalie Mackenzie Vozniak had six saves.

Bellefonte vs. P-O (boys): Bellefonte beat Philipsburg-Osceola 4-2 on Thursday. Carson Long had an assist and a goal for the Mounties and Ashton Crownover had a goal as the Mounties fall to 5-2.

State College (boys): State College beat Cedar Cliff 7-1 on Thursday.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 5-0 to Midd-West on Friday.

P-O (girls): Philipsburg-Osceola beat Moshannon Valley 6-0 on Saturday. Schenley Farrell scored a hat-trick, with assists from Kendra Smith and Olivia Hutton. Farrell also had two assists, assisting Lily Warlow and Khendyl Sharrer. Tatelynne Swatsworth scored the final goal, unassisted. The Mountie defense held Moshannon Valley to just three shots.

tennis

State College: State College came out on top, 3-2, of a battle with Hollidaysburg on Monday to improve to 9-2. Singles results were: Quiana Guo(SC) def. Gretta Rhodes 3-6,6-4,10-7; Ella Jodon(H) def. Kelly Steel 1-6, 7-5; and Rachel Gallagher(H) Madeline Miller 6-4, 6-3. Doubles: Emily Zhang/Allison Norloff(SC) def. Taliá Delerme/Megan Ferris 6-4, 6-3; and Marissa Xu/Jordan Dye(SC) def. Madeline Waibel/Nina Meadows 6-3, 6-3.

State College: State College beat Mercersberg Academy 8-3 on Tuesday in a contest that featured 10 varsity singles and five varsity doubles matches. The Little Lions improved to 10-2. Singles results were: Quiana Guo(SC) def. Isabel Su 8-0; Kelly Steel(SC) def. MC Miro 8-0; Madeline Miller(SC) vs. Dayoung Kim DNF; Marissa Xu (SC) def. Camille Smith 8-0; Izzy Jones(M) def. Seniors honored were: Marissa Xu, Madeline Miller, Jenna Schreiber, Kylie Ehrensberger, Alexa Adams and Sumedha Srinivasin. “They are an amazing group of young women and their leadership and dedication to our team has been instrumental in our success this season,” coach Jane Borden said.

Volleyball

P-O: Philipsburg beat Penns Valley 3-1 on Tuesday with scores of 25-15, 26-24, 23-25, and 25-18. Stat leaders were: Kalista Butler: 47 assists and 4 blocks; Reese Hazelton: 27 kills and 23 digs; Jayden Perks: 3 blocks; London Cutler: 7 kills; Abby Lumadue: 3 blocks; and Josie Tekely: 11 service points and 2 aces. The Mounties improved to 4-0 on the season.

BEA vs. Bellefonte: Bald Eagle Area swept Bellefonte 3-0 with scores of 25-14, 25-14, and 25-22 on Tuesday. Stat leaders for the Eagles were Maddie Perry with a season-high 15 kills, Clair Andrews with 7 and Ava Stere with 6 kills. Olivia Boone had a team-high 18 digs, while Perry and Megan Reese each added 14. Reese had a team-high 31 assists, and Madison Guenot, Perry and Boone each had four aces. For Bellefonte, Carlee Pepperman had 3 aces, 7 kills and 5 digs, Emalee Neff added 13 digs, Madison Melius had 12 assists and 8 digs and Carley Clarkson finished with 10 digs.

State College: State College beat Cedar Cliff 3-1 (28-30, 25-14, 25-23, 25-18) on Tuesday to improve to 4-1. Stat leaders for the Little Lions were Sam Shala with 23 assists and 5 aces; Kate Lally with 17 assists and 14 kills; Anna Witmer with 11 kills; Claire Jordan with 19 digs and Molly Thompson with 11 digs.

Bellefonte: Bellefonte fell 3-1 to Central Mountain on Wednesday.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley fell to Tyrone Thursday in five sets (22-25, 25-18, 25-22, 26-28, 14-16). Stat leaders for the Rams were: Cammie Upcraft with 11 kills; Kailen Winkelblech and Ella Hadley each with 10 kills; Julia Emel with 35 assists; Maddie Butler had 18 digs; Winkleblech had 15 digs; Laney Aston had 9 digs and 3 aces.

P-O vs. BEA: Philipsburg-Osceola swept Bald Eagle Area 3-0 on Thursday with scores of 25-15, 25-14, and 25-18. Stat leaders for P-O were: Kalista Butler with 24 assists; Reese Hazelton with 20 kills, 4 blocks and 10 service points; London Cutler with 15 digs; and Janey Johnson with 11 service points and 15 digs. Stat leaders for the Eagles, who were down several starters, were Madison Perry with 13 digs and three kills; and Megan Reese with 13 assists, eight digs and four service points. The Mounties improved to 5-0 overall and in the Mountain League, while Bald Eagle Area dropped to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the league.

State College: State College swept Central Dauphin on Thursday with scores of 25-12, 25-18, and 25-15 to improve to 5-1. Stat leaders for the Little Lions were: Kate Lally with 15 assists and Sam Shala with 7; Emi Shukla with 12 kills; Lally with 5 aces and Shukla with 4; and Molly Thompson and Shukla each with 7 digs.

Bellefonte: Bellefonte dropped a tightly contested 3-2 match to Hollidaysburg on Thursday (25-17, 23-25, 25-12, 19-25, 16-14).
