HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Oct. 18-23 in Centre County high school sports

Another busy week of Centre County high school sports wrapped up, with some teams finishing up their regular seasons and others already in postseason play.

Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s Timothy Peters led Centre County golfers at the PIAA individual championships this past week, tying for sixth place in Class 2A. Penns Valley’s Anna Stitzer, Philipsburg-Osceola’s Chad Muckey and Bellefonte’s boys team won Mountain League cross country titles.

Here are some of the highlights of Week 9:

Cross country

Mountain League Cross Country Championships (boys): Philipsburg-Osceola’s Chad Muckey placed first and Bellefonte won the team title on Wednesday at the Mountain League championship meet at Spring Mills. Muckey crossed the finish line in 16:34. Bellefonte’s Chase Ebeling, Alexander Crist and Alexander Mansfield finished fourth in 17:10, fifth in 17:22 and sixth in 18:04, respectively. Penns Valley’s McClain Reamer finished seventh (18:19) and Philipsburg-Osceola’s Scott Frantz was eighth (18:29). Rounding out the top 10 were Bellefonte’s Eric Bennett (ninth in 18:35) and Daniel Mussett (10th in 18:36). The Raiders won as a team with 34 points, followed by Hollidaysburg (50), then Tyrone (88), Philipsburg-Osceola (103), Penns Valley in fifth (110) and Clearfield in sixth (127).

Mountain League Cross Country Championships (girls): Penns Valley’s Anna Stitzer broke a personal and course record when she crossed the finish line in 19:09 to win the Mountain League championship meet on Wednesday in Spring Mills. Stitzer was followed by teammate Alexis Durn, who placed second in 21:34. Bellefonte’s Ashleigh Aukerman took fourth in 22:31 and Philipsburg-Osceola’s Manna Potter finished ninth with a time of 23:20. Hollidaysburg finished first with a score of 50, followed by Philipsburg-Osceola (63) in second place, Penns Valley in third (70), Clearfield fourth (80) and Bellefonte fifth (81).

Field hockey

State College: State College lost 3-0 on the road to Greenwood on Monday. Greenwood kept the Little Lions on defense for most of the game. Leah Moyer and Madi Gaul combined for four defensive saves and Molly Schreiner had 23 saves in goal.

State College: State College lost 2-1 in overtime to District 6 rival Mifflin County on Wednesday. State College led until 8:33 in the third quarter thanks to a first-quarter goal from Rachel Foster. The Huskies scored again at 10:49 in OT. Molly Shreiner had 12 saves for the Little Lions.

State College: State College beat Line Mountain 1-0 in its final regular season game on Thursday. Olivia Miller scored the lone goal of the game, at 4:48 in the fourth quarter, off an assist from Sydney O’Donnell. Molly Shreiner had six saves in the shutout. Lead official Rebecca Trunzo was honored by both teams after the game upon her retirement.

Golf

PIAA Class 2A individual championships: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s Timothy Peters tied for sixth on Monday with a score of 76 (+5) at the PIAA Class 2A boys individual golf championships at Heritage Hills in York.

PIAA Class 3A individual championships: State College’s John Olsen shot a 78 (+7) to tie for 28th in Class 3A boys and Bellefonte’s Riley Clute shot a 102 (+30) in the Class 3A girls individual golf championships at Heritage Hills in York.

Soccer

P-O (boys): Philipsburg-Osceola lost 2-1 in overtime to Cambria Heights on Monday. Carson Long scored for the Mounties, assisted by Matt Eirich.

Penns Valley vs. BEA (boys): Penns Valley scored two second-half goals to overcome Bald Eagle Area, 3-1, on Monday. Andrew Ream scored for the Eagles.

Penns Valley (girls): Penns Valley lost 6-0 to Hollidaysburg on Monday.

BEA (girls): Bald Eagle Are beat Tyrone 5-1 on Monday. Bald Eagle’s goals came from: Alex Hacker with an assist by Falen McHenry; Hacker unassisted; McHenry unassisted; Khloe Cunningham, assisted by Maura Cingle; and McHenry to end the game.

Bellefonte vs. P-O (girls): Bellefonte beat Philipsburg-Osceola 2-0 on Monday.

Bellefonte vs. P-O (boys): Bellefonte beat Philipsburg-Osceola 7-0 on Tuesday. Hayden Walker scored a hat trick in the victory. Andy Geresanko scored a pair of goals and Shea Chapman and AJ Packer each added one.

BEA (boys): Bald Eagle Area shut out Tyrone 6-0 on Tuesday. Andrew Ream scored a hat trick, Carter Stere added two goals and Camden Comly had one.

Penns Valley (boys): Penns Valley lost 5-0 to Hollidaysburg on Tuesday.

BEA (girls): Bald Eagle Area beat Huntingdon 2-0 on Wednesday to improve to 9-7-1 overall and 9-4-1 in the Mountain League. The Eagles out-shot the Bearcats 20-3. Falen McHenry score both of the Eagles’ goals, the first on a penalty kick at 48:13 and the second on an assist from Anna Cingle at 50:15. BEA’s Angie Grieb had three saves.

Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte rolled over Tyrone, 10-0, on Wednesday. Hayden Walker scored his second hat trick of the week. Colin Sharp and Tim Tichenko each had two goals, and Shea Chapman, Matt Uchneat and Andy Geresanko each had one.

Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte beat Tyrone 2-1 on Wednesday.

Penns Valley (girls): Penns Valley lost 3-1 to Clearfield on Wednesday.

Penns Valley (boys): Penns Valley beat Clearfield 3-0 on Wednesday.

State College (boys): State College lost 4-1 to Central Dauphin on Thursday.

State College (girls): State College lost 9-1 to Central Dauphin on Thursday. The Little Lions revealed prior to the game that they raised $10,138 for Good Day Cafe as part of their annual When Soccer Becomes Greater efforts.

Penns Valley (girls): Penns Valley lost 3-0 to Midd-West on Thursday.

BEA (boys): Bald Eagle Area fell 3-0 to Huntingdon on Friday to end its 2021 season.

P-O (girls): Philipsburg-Osceola had a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Cambria Heights on Friday to snap its three-game losing streak. Scoring for P-O were: Schenley Farrell, assisted by Lily Warlow; Warlow; Tatelynne Swatsworth; Farrell, assisted by Khendyl Sharrer; and Sharrer. Kinley Bender and Paige Rishel combined for 8 saves.

Volleyball

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy beat Moshannon Valley 3-2 on Senior Night on Monday. Scores were: 25-23; 28-18; 25-17; 25-15; 15-9.

State College: State College beat Altoona in four sets on Senior Night on Monday, with scores of 25-17, 25-17, 20-25, and 25-14, to improve to 9-2. Stat leaders for the Little Lions were: Claire Jordan, Iris Archibald, Molly Thompson and Sam Shala each with 11 digs; Jordan with 17 kills and Emi Shukla with 8; Archibald had 4 aces; Anna Witmer had a team-high 3 blocks; Kate Lally had 15 assists and Shala had 14. Seniors honored were: Archibald, Jordan, Shala, Shukla, Witmer and senior manager Brayden Kuruzovich.

P-O vs. BEA: Philipsburg-Osceola swept Bald Eagle Area on Tuesday, with scores of 25-12, 25-11 and 25-21, to improve to 13-0 and 12-0 in the Mountain League. Stat leaders for the Mounties were: Kalista Butler with 32 assists, 17 service points; Reese Hazelton with 22 kills, 4 blocks; and London Cutler with 16 digs. Stat leaders for the Eagles were: Maddie Perry with 4 kills and Claire Andrews with 3; Megan Reese had 9 assists; Olivia Boone had 15 digs and Ava Stere had 14.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley fell in four sets to Tyrone on Tuesday. Cammie Upcraft had 8 kills; Ella Hadley had 8 kills and 14 digs; Kailen Winkelblech tallied 5 kills, 5 digs and 3 service aces; Julia Emel had 16 assists and 7 digs; Maddie Butler had 26 digs and 2 aces; and Ellie Coursen had 5 kills.

Bellefonte: Bellefonte lost 3-1 to Hollidaysburg on Tuesday.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 3-0 to Glendale on Wednesday.

BEA vs. Penns Valley: Bald Eagle Area beat Penns Valley in four sets on Wednesday, with scores of 26-24, 24-26, 25-18, and 25-17. Stat leaders for the Eagles were: Maddie Perry with a season-high 18 kills; Ava Stere with 11 kills and Claire Andrews with 7; Olivia Boone with 3 aces and 12 digs; 22 digs from Perry and Stere and 21 from Maddie Guenot; Andrews with 5 terminal blocks; and Megan Reese with 53 assists. Stat leaders for the Rams were: Ella Hadley with 14 kills and 10 digs; Kailen Winkelblech with 12 kills and 11 digs; Cammie Upcraft with 9 kills and 1 block; Julia Emel had 33 assists and 12 digs; Maddie Butler tallied a team-high 20 digs; and Brianna Bressler added 15 digs.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy beat South Williamsport 3-2 on Thursday.

P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola swept Huntingdon, with scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-21, on Thursday to improve to 14-0 overall and 13-0 in the Mountain League. Stat leaders were: Kalista Butler with 33 assists and 2 aces; Reese Hazelton with 15 kills and 2 blocks; London Cutler with 16 digs, 10 service points, 2 aces, and 2 blocks; and Janey Johnson with 15 digs.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley fell to Hollidaysburg on four sets on Thursday, with scores of 28-30, 18-25, 26-24, 24-26. Stat leaders for the Rams were: Kailen Winkelbech with 11 kills plus 5 digs; Cammie Upcraft with 9 kills plus 4 blocks; Ella Hadley with 8 kills and 12 digs; Ellie Coursen with 5 kills and 3 blocks; Maddie Butler with a team-high 24 digs; Julia Emel with 28 assists, 15 digs, and 4 aces; and Brianna Bressler with 6 digs and 2 aces.

BEA: Bald Eagle Area swept Clearfield with scores of 25-17, 25-15, and 25-15 on Thursday. Stat leaders were: Maddie Perry with 11 kills, Ava Stere with 8 kills and Maddie Guenot with 5; Jocelyn Hyde had 3 aces, while Alexis Frank and Olivia Boone added a pair; Boone had 17 digs and Perry had 16; and Megan Reese had 30 assists.

State College: State College swept Mifflin County in its last regular season match, with scores of 25-5, 25-15 and 25-8, to improve to 10-2. Stat leaders were: Kate Lally with 6 kills and 11 assists; Sam Shala had 5 kills and 5 assists; Lally had 5 aces, while Iris Archibald and Sarah Tate each added 3 aces; Claire Jordan had 6 digs and Lally added 6; and Shala had 2 blocks.
