Bald Eagle fell 29-21 to Montoursville, Bellefonte defeated Philipsburg-Osceola 9-8, Clearfield beat Penns Valley 42-14 and State College won 19-8 over Central Dauphin on Friday night.

Here are five takeaways from Week 5 of the 2022 high school football season in Centre County.

Bald Eagle comes close to holding a winning record

The Eagles have consistently grown better over the course of the 2022 season. They began the year with two losses, followed up with two wins and had a slate with Montoursville on the road on Friday night. While losing 29-21, Bald Eagle showed improvement, especially against a non-conference opponent.

Bellefonte wins narrowly

The Red Raiders were finally able to notch their first win of the season as they defeated Philipsburg-Osceola 9-8 on Friday to win the Luther Trophy. Bellefonte has fought hard all year and reaped the benefits of its work in practice. It came in the form of a defensive battle and now the 1-4 Red Raiders will take their talents to Hollidaysburg to look for win number two.

Clearfield continues to show its ability

The Bison seem to be an unstoppable force. Losing 20-7 against Juniata on Aug. 27 only motivated the team. Since that meeting, the Bison are 4-0. Three of the wins have come against Centre County teams — 7-3 against Bald Eagle (Sept. 2), 55-0 over Philipsburg-Osceola (Sept. 16) and 42-14 against Penns Valley on Friday. The last stone in Clearfield’s Centre County Mountain League Infinity Gauntlet comes with a possible victory over Bellefonte on Oct. 14.

Philipsburg-Osceola couldn’t get its offense going

The Mounties have scored just 67 points in five games. While their offense calls for control of the clock with the rushing attack, more must come from the offensive side of the ball for the team to flourish. Philipsburg-Osceola has scored 10 points or less in its past four games.

State College football is one of the top-flight programs in Pennsylvania

The Little Lions were able to get a taste of playing in the state semifinals last season. While the game ended in a 49-28 loss to Mt. Lebanon on Dec. 4, 2021, State College looked to become even better in 2022. Not only have the Little Lions gotten better, but they are healthier and are 5-0 after beating Central Dauphin 19-8 on Friday.

Last time the Little Lions played against the Rams, they lost 42-21 on Oct. 1, 2021. This team may have many of the same players, but the focus is even greater after realizing their potential.
