Poll results: Philipsburg-Osceola basketball player selected CDT Girls Athlete of the Week
A Philipsburg-Osceola girls player took first place in the most recent athlete of the week poll, as selected by readers of CentreDaily.com.
Khendyl Sharrer was nominated for the week of Jan. 3-Jan. 9, finishing with 67% of the vote (7,036 votes). While Sharrer didn’t score as much as she usually does on Jan. 3 against Huntingdon in a 34-14 loss, she had 11 rebounds and six steals to go with two points. She finished with six points, 11 rebounds, one assist and three steals in a 49-22 loss to Penns Valley on Jan. 6.
Below were the other nominees for the week of Jan. 3-9.
Ann-Marie McMurtrie, Penns Valley girls basketball: The senior forward scored a total of 26 points in two games, beginning with a 14-point performance against Bald Eagle Area on Jan. 3. Penns Valley won 50-37. She followed up by scoring 12 points against Philipsburg-Osceola on Jan. 6 in a 49-22 victory. She took second place in the poll, with 1,473 votes.
Aubrey Yartz, Saint Joseph’s Catholic girls basketball: Yartz is among the top of a number of the Tri-Valley Athletic Association’s statistical categories. She averaged 10 points per game in four games, had nine steals, 40 rebounds, leads her league in blocks and she’s just a first-year player for the Wolfpack.
Jade Castro, State College girls swimming: The senior Auburn commit had an outstanding performance at the Bucknell New Year’s Challenge on Jan. 7. State College (Castro, Madison Watschke, Ally Koehle and Molly Workman) won the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:43.80. Castro went on to win the 200-yard individual medley in 2:03.92. Castro was also a part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team, along with Workman, Watschke and Kelly Brownstead, finishing in 1:36.29. Castro additionally won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 54.29.
Scotty Dinges, Penns Valley girls basketball: Dinges scored 25 points in two games last week for the Lady Rams. She began her week with a team-high 18 points in a 50-37 victory over Bald Eagle on Jan. 3. The junior guard had seven points in a 49-22 win over Philipsburg-Osceola on Jan. 6.
