Poll results: Bellefonte basketball player selected as CDT Boys Athlete of the Week
A Bellefonte basketball player is the boys athlete of the week for Jan. 10-16, as selected by readers of CentreDaily.com.
Jacob McConnell was the second 18-point scorer in Bellefonte’s 58-49 victory over Philipsburg-Osceola on Jan. 10. The junior guard made a few tough shots, driving through the lane and found his way to the free throw line. He had 55% of the vote in the poll (8,309 votes).
Below were the other nominees.
Charlie Yartz, Saint Joseph’s Catholic boys basketball: While Saint Joe’s lost to Halifax 63-57 on Jan. 10, Yartz continued to play at a high level with 17 points, 12 rebounds, one assist and a steal. His team won its next game on Jan. 13, 66-53 over Line Mountain. Yartz had 14 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, a block and two steals.
Coen Bainey, Bald Eagle wrestling: Bainey went from his usual weight class of 127 to 133 on Jan. 10 to take on Penns Valley’s Chase Fleshman, defeating him 20-5 on a technical fall in 5:51. Bald Eagle ultimately fell 31-27.
Cole Crissman, Bellefonte boys basketball: Crissman was one of two 18-point scorers for Bellefonte boys basketball in their matchup against Philipsburg-Osceola on Jan. 10. The senior sent in a number of dunks and hit a few 3-pointers to aid his team to a 58-49 victory.
Colton Shunk, Penns Valley wrestling: Shunk (139) had a 17-0 technical fall over Bald Eagle’s Hunter Ishler in 5:48 to win on Jan. 10. Penns Valley went on to win 31-27. He took second place in the poll, with 33% of the vote (5,006 votes).
Jackson Romig, Penns Valley boys basketball: Romig had 13 points in a 54-29 loss to Hollidaysburg on Jan. 9. He had an even stronger performance against Mount Union in a narrow 55-54 loss on Jan. 10, finishing with 22 points in the matchup.
Jacob DeSimone, Philipsburg-Osceola boys basketball: DeSimone was the high-point man in Philipsburg-Osceola’s 58-49 loss to Bellefonte on Jan. 10. He finished with 21 points and doubled with a strong performance on the defensive end of the game.
Michael Lower, Saint Joseph’s boys basketball: The sophomore guard went off for 20 points, four rebounds and a steal in 63-57 loss to Halifax on Jan. 10. Lower finished with 12 points, two rebounds and an assist in Saint Joe’s 66-53 win over Line Mountain on Jan. 13.
