Poll results: Saint Joseph’s basketball player selected as CDT Boys Athlete of the Week

A Saint Joseph’s basketball player who had a big week on the court is the boys athlete of the week for Jan. 30-Feb. 5, as selected by readers of CentreDaily.com.

Michael Lower had 18 points, five rebounds, one assist and two steals against Newport in a 55-48 win on Jan. 30. He went on to have 13 points in Saint Joseph’s 80-73 win over Juniata Valley on Feb. 1 and followed with 17 points, two rebounds and two assists in a 77-45 victory against Susquenita the next day. He received 60% of the vote (7,009 votes).

Here were the other nominees:

Cam Watkins, Bald Eagle basketball: Watkins had eight points in Bald Eagle’s 44-28 win over Northern Cambria on Jan. 30. He followed with 15 points against Hollidaysburg in a 54-51 victory on Jan. 31. The junior finished the week with 14 points in a 52-51 overtime win against Tyrone.

Charlie Yartz, Saint Joseph’s boys basketball: Yartz had 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and a block in a 55-48 victory against Newport on Jan. 30. He went on to have 29 points in Saint Joseph’s 80-73 win over Juniata Valley on Feb. 1 and followed with 10 points, five rebounds and three assists in a 77-45 victory against Susquenita on Feb. 2.

Coen Bainey, Bald Eagle wrestling: Bainey pinned Chase Fleshman (133) in Bald Eagle’s 32-31 victory over Penns Valley in the District 6 consolation finals on Feb. 4. He also had a pin in his 127 match against Huntingdon earlier in the tournament.

Nick Pavlechko, State College wrestling: Pavlechko pinned Brayden Blackwell (285) in 3:56 in a District 6 Class 3A match. State College ultimately fell to Central Mountain 36-34.

Ty Watson, Penns Valley wrestling: Watson pinned Gavin Bennett (152) in Penns Valley’s 32-31 loss to Bald Eagle in the District 6 consolation finals on Feb. 4. He additionally had a 10-0 major decision against United in the semifinals.
