Poll results: State College volleyball player named athlete of the week for Sept. 2-8
A State College girls volleyball player was the Centre County athlete of the week for Sept. 2-8, according to readers of CentreDaily.com.
Sarah Tate had 2,842 votes, or 50% of votes in the poll, which was open through 8 p.m. Sunday.
State High had two big victories in the Sept. 2-8 period, with Tate leading the team to a 3-0 sweep over Cumberland Valley on the road and a 3-2 comeback win at home over previously undefeated Central Dauphin. Tate tallied 13 kills and 10 digs against Cumberland Valley before earning 19 digs and 15 kills against Central Dauphin. She also added 58 kills, 36 digs and six blocks in the Wilson Tournament on Sept. 7.
Below is a look at the other nominees, which were submitted by school athletic directors:
Keira Clarkson, Bellefonte girls volleyball: Bellefonte’s Keira Clarkson had a strong week for the school’s girls volleyball team. Clarkson recorded 24 kills, nine digs and seven aces in three matches. The junior has been a varsity player since her freshman year and has moved to outside hitter this year.
Clarkson came in second in the poll with 1,452 votes (26%).
Isaac Opperman, State College boys cross country: Isaac Opperman finished second at the Big Valley Invitational for State High, posting a time of 15:36 and leading his team to victory in one of their first meets of the season.
Luke Ruoff, Penns Valley boys soccer: Penns Valley boys soccer defeated Westmont Hilltop 2-0 in the nominating week, with Luke Ruoff scoring on a penalty kick that proved to be the game winner.
Olivia Homan, Penns Valley girls soccer: Penns Valley’s Olivia Homan found the back of the net twice in one game for the school’s girls soccer team during the nominating week. She scored two goals in the Rams’ 7-0 win over Westmont Hilltop.
Ashten Howell, Bellefonte football: Bellefonte football’s Ashten Howell was the school’s leading rusher through three games, with 146 yards on 13 carries. He reached that total by rushing for 36 yards on six carries against Bishop Guilfoyle. He also caught three passes in the game for 30 yards.
