What changes do State College Spikes have in store for 2020? Here’s what you need to know
The State College Spikes have some changes in store for their 15th season.
General manager Scott Walker said the team is responding to fan feedback about game times. A survey showed an “overwhelming” desire to move the first pitch up by a half-hour, and the team will do that this year. Monday through Saturday home games will start at 6:35 p.m.
“The games are going longer,” Walker said. “I see so many kids on parents’ shoulders falling asleep missing the fireworks show.”
For years, fans have asked for more day games, Walker said. This season, the Spikes will oblige. The team’s first four Sunday home games will start at 4:05 p.m. The team also will move fireworks shows to Friday and Saturday nights.
The announcements were part of the launch of the #SaveOurSpikes campaign Thursday. The campaign aims to rally fan support for the team in response to Major League Baseball’s proposal that would put 42 minor league clubs — including the Spikes — in danger of losing their affiliations.
“In an effort to give back to the fans who’ve joined us for the last 14 seasons,” Walker said, outfield bleacher seats will be available for $6 — the same price as during the Spikes’ inaugural season. There will be specials during the season that cut that price in half, as well as nights with $1 bleacher seats.
The Spikes open their season at home against the Williamsport Crosscutters on June 18.
