State College Spikes’ season ‘delayed indefinitely’ by COVID-19 pandemic

The State College Spikes will have to wait a bit longer to take the field for their 15th season.

The New York-Penn League announced Friday that the start of the season will be “delayed indefinitely” due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The league was scheduled to open Thursday, with the Spikes set to host the Williamsport Crosscutters.

“The league and its clubs will continue to monitor the situation and work with our Major League Baseball affiliates, while following the recommendations of public health officials and adhering to local reopening guidelines,” the NY-PL said in a statement. “As always, the health and safety of the New York-Penn League fans, players and staff members are our top priorities.”

The league also canceled its all-star game scheduled for August in Lowell, Massachusetts.

The delay adds to the uncertainty that has surrounded the Spikes since last fall. The team was reported to be among several at risk of losing their affiliation after the 2020 season. In response, the club launched the Save Our Spikes campaign in January to harness community support. The Spikes also adjusted game times and fireworks nights based on fan feedback ahead of their anniversary season. The Spikes had no comment Friday afternoon beyond the league statement.

Minor league players are waiting to find out when, and if, their season will start, as are big leaguers. In the majors, players and owners are at odds over salaries and the length of the season. Major League Baseball on Friday proposed that players receive 80% of their prorated salaries and play a 72-game schedule starting July 14, according to The Associated Press. The players on Tuesday offered to play an 89-game regular season at full prorated pay.
