Centre Region playgrounds are now open, with families urged to use caution

Nearly 45 playgrounds maintained by the Centre Region Parks and Recreation Authority reopened Monday after a 70-day hiatus.

The structures, which were closed to mitigate the potential spread of the new coronavirus, are not routinely sanitized. Visitors are encouraged to be mindful of their hygiene and not overcrowd parks.

“The Centre Region has a wonderful network of parks, and not only has it been great to see people getting much-needed physical activity and time outside in safe ways, but it has also been incredible to realize how vital the parks system is to our community,” the organization wrote on Facebook.

A majority of CRPR programming, events, camps and other activities remain canceled through June 30. Decisions about pools and the Active Adult Center are expected in the “coming days and weeks,” the organization said.

The Park Forest and Welch pools are expected to open “later this summer,” according to the organization An operating schedule and opening day is scheduled to be announced mid-June.

All restroom buildings reopened, and portable toilets were delivered to parks without restrooms. Water fountains remain closed.

Reservations for sports fields and courts, which reopened for drop-in use, are expected to be accepted starting June 22. Until then, no organized youth or adult sports groups, large events, tournaments or leagues are allowed to use fields or courts.

Pavilions are also limited to drop-in use. Basketball courts at all State College parks remain closed.
