These shops opened their doors in State College, plus more business news from September
A bookstore and diner opened in State College, while Ferguson Township considered plans for a new convenience store and discount retailer. Here’s a look at recent business news in Centre County.
In the works
- J&C Market, a retail Asian market, is looking to open at 1869 N. Atherton St. in Patton Township. The site formerly housed Lohr’s Garage.
- Rutter’s plans to open a location at West College Avenue and Old Block Road in Ferguson Township. This would be the second Centre County location for the convenience store and gas station.
- Dollar General is also planning a store along West College Avenue in Ferguson Township. The shop would be part of the Orchard Square development, which is in the area of West College and Whitehall Road.
- The county’s fourth medical marijuana dispensary expects to open in October. Vytal Options will open Oct. 3 at 1653 N. Atherton St., Patton Township, near Walmart. The dispensary will be open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Saturday and closed on Sundays.
Closings
Bradley’s Cheesesteaks & Hoagies closed its downtown State College location. The shop had operated at 119 S. Pugh St. after almost 14 years. Owner Ben Lippincott wrote on Facebook that the 1669 N. Atherton St. location would remain open.
Now open
- Way Fruit Farm has opened a downtown State College location, its second, at 252 E. Calder Way. The CDT previously reported on the plans in June.
- The Squirrel and Acorn Bookshop is open at 103 S. Allen St. in downtown State College, according to its Facebook page. The CDT previously wrote about the shop in June.
- Oeuf Boeuf et Bacon has opened its doors at the former Baby’s Burgers and Shakes at 131 S. Garner St. in downtown State College, according to its Facebook page. The CDT previously wrote about plans for this diner with a French twist in August.
- Crumbl Cookies held its grand opening Sept. 30. The chain’s first Centre County shop is located at 19 Colonnade Way in the former location of Jos. A Bank. The CDT previously wrote about the shop in July.
On the move
Leanne Lenz will step down as executive director of the Centre County United Way as of Oct. 7. She has been in that role since July 2021. Lenz plans to join Student Care and Advocacy at Penn State. United Way’s upcoming events include Day of Caring on Oct. 6 and Taste of the Town on Dec. 15.
