New places to eat, shop and more: Centre County business news you may have missed
Like the David Bowie song playing on a loop on some State College radio stations, January brought about many ch-ch-ch-ch changes in the Centre County business scene.
While Penn State students mourned the loss of a downtown pizza place, there’s reason to be excited for “coming soon” announcements across the county, as well as new faces to welcome and new places to shop and dine.
Here’s a look at business news from January you may have missed:
Openings
- Dollar General opened a new location in Ferguson Township, at 3283 W. College Ave. The company planned to mark the store’s opening by donating 100 new books to a nearby elementary school.
- Carter’s Table opened Jan. 21 at 407 E. Beaver Ave. in downtown State College. Local diners may already be familiar with Carter’s Table as it was formerly a food stand that made appearances around the area.
- Vintage and modern fashion collective Shae Nouveau opened at 141 W. High St., Bellefonte, in the space formerly occupied by Lock Boutique, which relocated to downtown State College.
- The Meandering Mallard Coffee House opened at 106 E. Main St., Millheim, in the former home of The Inglebean Cafe.
Closings
- Gumby’s Pizza, a downtown State College restaurant, posted a sign to its door this month that it’s now “permanently closed,” the Daily Collegian reported.
In the works
- Dunkin’ announced it plans to open a new location this summer in Centre Hall at 479 S. Pennsylvania Ave., where First National Bank closed a few months ago.
- Pelican’s SnoBalls, a New Orleans-style shaved ice shop, is preparing to open this spring at 219 S. Water St., Bellefonte, the former Subway location. It would be the first Pelican’s in Centre County and fourth in Pennsylvania.
Hirings
- The Centre County United Way announced it has a new executive director after a nationwide search. Paula M. Williams, a Penn State alum, will take the helm of the organization on Feb. 6. Williams has a background of leading nonprofits in the southwestern United States.
Station shakeup
- Local radio stations are undergoing a shakeup, and using David Bowie’s “Changes” to alert listeners. It stems from Seven Mountains Media’s acquisition of 34 stations from Forever Media, leading several State College programs to merge or replace local Forever Media programming.
