A highly anticipated drive-thru coffee shop will soon host a grand opening in State College.
7 Brew Coffee will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, to officially open its 1923 S. Atherton St. location. The chain’s first State College-area shop is nearly ready to open following a speedy construction process in College Township’s Hills Plaza shopping center.
Representatives from the Chamber of Business and Industry of Centre County will join 7 Brew officials at the grand opening, according to a media release. The company will also present a check to Penn State’s IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon — better known simply as Thon — as part of 7 Brew’s “core value of cultivating kindness in the community,” a public relations representative said.
State College’s 7 Brew shop will also host a “swag day” on Dec. 12 at which customers will receive a free 7 Brew T-shirt if they purchase a large-sized drink.
Work at 7 Brew’s State College site moved quickly after workers helped settle a prefabricated building onto the parking lot site in mid-September. Using modular buildings has helped the company quickly expand across the country, according to Matt Peters, the director of operations for 7 Brew’s Pennsylvania and northern Delaware locations.
“It comes in on a crane, we drop it in and, believe it or not, everything inside the building is completely done — the ceiling, the walls, the tables, the bathrooms and more,” Peters told the Centre Daily Times in September. “We’re kind of able to go from having nothing there to saying, ‘Holy crap, there’s a whole building there now.’”
7 Brew’s State College shop is expected to employ at least 50 part-time workers, but Peters said that figure could reach as high as 70 or 80 part-time jobs. He said the company tends to hire dozens of part-time workers while preparing to open shops, which can each employ roughly 20 people per shift on busy days.
Plans to bring a 7 Brew location to State College were first unveiled publicly by county officials in August 2024. Peters said State College has long been viewed as a prime expansion target as the company expands across Pennsylvania.
“It’s a great market, and that’s undeniable. It’s a market we’ve been trying to get to,” Peters said. “We thought State College would be a good fit for the overall economics but also a positive light and business in the community to continue spreading joy and happiness and a different drive-thru experience no one else has seen.”
State College’s 7 Brew location will mark the company’s eighth in Pennsylvania, joining other sites in DuBois, Carlisle and Reading, among other locales. The Arkansas-headquartered company has launched hundreds of shops in more than 30 states since its 2017 founding.
7 Brew locations are known for their expansive drink menu that offers more than 20,000 unique combinations and varieties of coffees, energy drinks, teas and smoothies, the company says. The drive-thru-only company’s locations do not offer indoor or outdoor seating.
Though the company has not yet shared operating hours for State College’s location, every other 7 Brew in Pennsylvania is open daily from at least 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
