Openings, closings and other Centre County business changes from April you may have missed

Several new businesses opened their doors, or announced plans to do so, in Centre County in April. Here’s a look.

New spots to check out

  • Co-owners Lisa Harpster and John Schaffer opened Antifragile Brewing Co. at 324 E. Calder Way in downtown State College. It’s the only brewery in the borough and plans to operate 3 p.m.- midnight Friday, 1 p.m.-midnight Saturday and 1-8 p.m. Sunday.
  • Verilife State College opened at the former site of Home D Pizzeria, 1820 S. Atherton St., State College. It’s the county’s third medical marijuana dispensary; all are on Atherton Street. Verilife operates from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. every day.
  • Wendy’s opened at 521 University Drive, the former Burger King site. It’s the second State College location for CKA Management, the franchise owner. The company does not own the Wendy’s in Bellefonte.
  • Centre County’s first Sephora store was expected to open inside the Kohl’s at 275 Colonnade Blvd. in State College. The national beauty chain is opening 400 stores in 36 states around the country in 2022.

What’s in the works?

  • Discount retail chain Ocean State Job Lot announced plans to open a store this summer at 2222 E. College Ave., State College, the former site of a Giant supermarket. The company purchased the Nittany Commons shopping center, which includes Pep Boys and the former Giant space.
  • Planet Fitness expects to open a location in downtown State College later this year. The club is taking over the former H&M clothing store space in the Fraser Centre, 118 S. Fraser St.
  • Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers delayed the opening of its downtown State College location at 228 E. College Ave. until late June. It was expected to open in April.

Pharmacy to close

Penns Valley Pharmacy owner Nicole Krahling wrote on Facebook that the business would close April 29 after almost two decades. As of May 1, Boalsburg Apothecary will handle the pharmacy’s records, according to a Facebook post.

Odds and ends

  • The Moshannon Valley Economic Development Partnership sold the last remaining lot in the Moshannon Valley Regional Business Park. The almost 5-acre lot was sold to Don Heaney, of DFH Real Estate LLC. Heaney owns Advanced Powder Products, which is located in an adjacent lot.
  • Leah Mueller, and her husband, Jared Yarnall-Schane are the new directors of Singing Onstage. Mueller performed with Singing Onstage several times during high school and spent six years as Delta Middle School performing arts teacher. Yarnall-Schane is a Penn State graduate and entrepreneur and program director. They will take over for Heidi and Richard Biever, who plan to move to Wichita, Kansas, this summer.
