A College Township street that has had only one lane open since May will reopen to two-way traffic beginning Thursday.

Pike Street, in Lemont, will reopen to two-way traffic Thursday but construction crews will still be present as work continues, according to a press release from the township. This may result in periodic lane flagging and short-term traffic delays.

Due to the $1.52 million Pike Street Traffic Calming and Accessibility project, road closures and modified traffic patterns in Lemont have been in place for several months and significantly impacted foot traffic and sales to local businesses.

The project aims to improve local infrastructure. In its second phase, the improvements constructed include curbing, stormwater upgrades, delineated parallel parking, curb ramps and full sidewalks along both sides of Pike Street from the intersection with Elmwood Street to Dale Street, according to the release.

The first phase of the project was completed in 2021 and included waterline and gas line relocation work.

Tree planting, landscaping and some minor construction activities are anticipated to occur in spring 2023.
