A Virginia player had to check his ticket over and over again “to make sure he wasn’t dreaming” after winning a huge prize off a scratch-off game, lottery officials said.

A Virginia man couldn’t believe his luck after scoring a top prize, lottery officials said.

Kevin Egan won a $1 million top prize off a $1,000,000 Gold Rush ticket — but he had to check the ticket over and over “to make sure he wasn’t dreaming,” the Virginia Lottery said in a Dec. 13 news release.

Egan — who chose to take the full $1 million prize in annuity — told the lottery he plans on saving his winnings, but he’s also considering getting a new car.

He bought the ticket from a grocery store in Weber City, about a 100-mile drive northeast from Knoxville, Tennessee, lottery officials said.

His win marks the first top prize win in the game, which started Nov. 5, according to lottery officials. There are four top prizes left, and the odds of winning are 1 in 734,400.

The game also features prizes ranging from $75 to $50,000, and the overall odds of winning are 1 in 3.55, lottery officials said.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
