Franklin: "They made plays. They were able to stay on schedule on first and second downs. ... Offensively, we weren't able to get the running game going."
— Parth Upadhyaya (@pupadhyaya_) November 8, 2020
#PennState HC James Franklin, on whether he considered pulling QB Sean Clifford late in the game: "To me, you want to give your starting quarterback a chance to be successful and rally the team. ... The guy's in that position for a reason."
— Parth Upadhyaya (@pupadhyaya_) November 8, 2020
Don't let the final score fool you, this game wasn't close. Maryland takes down Penn State, 35-19.

FINAL: Maryland 35, Penn State 19
— Parth Upadhyaya (@pupadhyaya_) November 7, 2020
The Nittany Lions are now 0-3 to open their season for the first time since 2001.
Washington scores another TD — this time, off a one-yard pass from Clifford. Penn State's 2-point conversion that follows is no good.

Terrapins 35, Nittany Lions 19 w/ 10 secs left in this game
Clifford hits WR Parker Washington for a 23-yard TD. Washington grabbed that ball even with the defensive PI. Nittany Lions follow that up with a failed 2-point conversion.

UMD 35, PSU 13 w/ 10:16 left in the game
End of 3Q: UMD 35, PSU 7
— Parth Upadhyaya (@pupadhyaya_) November 7, 2020
UMD LB Ruben Hyppolite II sacks Clifford on 4th down for the Terps' fourth sack of the game. Maryland took over at PSU's 38-yard line.
— Parth Upadhyaya (@pupadhyaya_) November 7, 2020
At some point Penn State needs to see if Will Levis — or even Ta'Quan Roberson — can be the answer at quarterback.
— Jon Sauber (@JonSauber) November 7, 2020
Clifford takes a 16-yard sack to make it a 50-yard field goal attempt instead of a 34-yard attempt. He had several chances to throw the ball away but kept moving backwards instead. Pinegar misses from 50 to keep it at 35-7, Maryland.
— Jon Sauber (@JonSauber) November 7, 2020
This looks like the most embarrassing loss since 2000 when Toledo upset Penn State at home 24 to 6. Former Penn State quarterback Pete Liske was Toledo’s AD at the time
— Lou Prato (@LouPrato) November 7, 2020
It's only a few plays, but Clifford is keeping his head up when pressure comes so far in the second half.
— Jon Sauber (@JonSauber) November 7, 2020
Clifford fumbles on a sack in PSU's first drive of the 2nd half. Maryland scoops the ball up and returns it for a 33-yard TD.
— Parth Upadhyaya (@pupadhyaya_) November 7, 2020
UMD 35, PSU 7 w/ 12:55 left in 3Q
Rough first half for Penn State, they trail Maryland 28-7. pic.twitter.com/BS2g5EPsYo

Halftime: Maryland 28, Penn State 7
— Parth Upadhyaya (@pupadhyaya_) November 7, 2020
Terrapins have 335 total yards of offense, compared to Nittany Lions' 144.
That sack on first down was 100% on Clifford. He felt pressure, panicked and ran into his own lineman.
— Jon Sauber (@JonSauber) November 7, 2020
Maryland with yet another touchdown. Joey Porter Jr. let Dontay Demas get past him and Tagovailoa found the wideout for an easy score. 28-7, Terps.
— Jon Sauber (@JonSauber) November 7, 2020
Clifford on that last drive: 0-5 passing with a 15-yard scramble that kept the drive alive when it was 3rd-and-10 on the Nittany Lions' own 11-yard line.
— Parth Upadhyaya (@pupadhyaya_) November 7, 2020
PSU could've used some momentum headed into the locker room but didn't get it there.
Let's check in on Jahan Dotson.

Yep, still a ridiculous playmaker. @H55ZY | @PennStateFball pic.twitter.com/YC0lbn3xAd
Jahan Dotson. PLAYMAKER.

Dotson (@H55ZY) comes down with a TD grab in the corner of the end zone to get the Nittany Lions on the board!#WeAre pic.twitter.com/2LkL9ORY9u
Penn State is getting embarrassed by Maryland. Nothing good is happening for the Nittany Lions and there's no reason to think they'll be able to come back in this one. 21-0, Terps.
— Jon Sauber (@JonSauber) November 7, 2020
Tagovailoa scrambled for 15 yards to PSU's 28-yard line a couple plays ago. He's absolutely shredding the Nittany Lions' defense right now.
— Parth Upadhyaya (@pupadhyaya_) November 7, 2020
The sophomore QB is 8-10 for 156 yards and two TDs through the air, and has 14 yards rushing.
Drive ends in yet another three-and-out for PSU. Nittany Lions were forced to punt from their own 28. https://t.co/t90UKGV8cV
— Parth Upadhyaya (@pupadhyaya_) November 7, 2020
The Nittany Lions were *27.5-point favorites* in this one, but find themselves down 14-0 as the 1st quarter comes to a close. Yikes.
— Parth Upadhyaya (@pupadhyaya_) November 7, 2020
Touchdown, Maryland.
— Penn State Football (@PennStateFball) November 7, 2020
Penn State trails 14-0 near the end of Q1. #WeAre
Clifford misses an open Pat Freiermuth on second down then eats a sack on third down. Maryland will start its next drive on its own 22.
— Jon Sauber (@JonSauber) November 7, 2020
Now, Clifford is sacked for a loss of 13 to bring up 4th and 19. Nittany Lions go three-and-out and punt it away.

Fan cutouts -- including a horse! -- respond to PSU's incompletion on 4th and 3. pic.twitter.com/rBcVN3djtW
— Audrey Snyder (@audsnyder4) November 7, 2020
Looked like a slot fade on fourth down for Penn State there. It falls incomplete and the Nittany Lions turn it over on downs.
— Jon Sauber (@JonSauber) November 7, 2020
Clifford had WR Parker Washington in the left corner of the endzone but just barely overthrew him. Nittany Lions come up empty on their first drive of the contest. https://t.co/QorAk92PNW
— Parth Upadhyaya (@pupadhyaya_) November 7, 2020
QB Sean Clifford fakes a throw, then scrambles for 13 yards to the UMD 28. Then, RB Devyn Ford carries for five yards.
— Parth Upadhyaya (@pupadhyaya_) November 7, 2020
Nittany Lions moving the ball well early.
Maryland just scored a touchdown against Penn State for the first time since 2016. Tagovailoa hits Rakim Jarrett for a 42-yard score.
— Parth Upadhyaya (@pupadhyaya_) November 7, 2020
UMD 7, PSU 0 w/ 12:27 left in 1Q
Penn State's defense gets walked down the field and the Terrapins open the score with a 42-yard pass from Taulia Tagovailoa to Rakim Jarrett. Another bad start for Penn State.
— Jon Sauber (@JonSauber) November 7, 2020
Maryland won the coin toss and elected to receive. Here we go.

In the teams' last three matchups, #PennState has outscored Maryland 163-6.
— Parth Upadhyaya (@pupadhyaya_) November 7, 2020
But the Terrapins are coming off a big OT win over Minnesota, where Taulia Tagovailoa had one of the best games by a QB in Big Ten history. Excited to see how this one turns out.
