Tariq Castro-Fields is the highest selected Penn State cornerback in the NFL draft since 2020. Castro-Fields was taken by the San Francisco 49ers with the No. 221 overall pick and the 43rd and final pick of the sixth round.

Castro-Fields is the sixth Nittany Lion to go in the 2022 NFL Draft — joining Jahan Dotson, Arnold Ebiketie, Jaquan Brisker, Brandon Smith and Jordan Stout — and the third on Day 3, joining Smith and Stout. NFL Draft analyst Lance Zierlein expected Castro-Fields to be selected in the fourth round.

The senior cornerback made 12 starts with 32 tackles (25 solo) and six pass breakups in 2021. He was named an All-Big Ten honorable mention by the coaches and media and earned an invitation to the Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Castro-Fields measured at 6-foot-1, 197 pounds at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds in his only workout at the combine.
