Penn State hockey’s Liam Folkes signs contract with Edonton Oilers AHL affiliate

Liam Folkes is headed to the AHL.

The senior alternate captain for Penn State, who has become known for his ability to score clutch goals throughout his Nittany Lion career, signed a two-year contract with the Bakersfield Condors, the AHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers.

“Mr. Clutch has scored a number of huge goals in our program history. Early in his college career he made the decision to become a complete player; it’s very fitting that guys like that get rewarded for their commitment,” coach Guy Gadowsky said in a statement. “We are thrilled and excited for Folkesy and look forward to watching him score more huge goals at the next level.”

Folkes is now the third former Penn State player to sign a professional contract this offseason with Brandon Biro and Nate Sucese both signing NHL deals.

Folkes is leaving Penn State ranked No. 7 on the all-time scoring list and fourth-highest single-season point total in program history with 42 in the 2018-19 season.

Folkes will be remembered for scoring one of the biggest goals in program history, when he netted the game-winner in double overtime as a freshman to win the 2017 Big Ten Championship.

“The facilities at Pegula Ice Arena are state of the art and helped me further my development these past four years and I’m looking forward to what the future holds,” Folkes said in a statement..
