Balloons were hanging on a couple of stationary bikes inside Penn State’s wrestling room on Monday afternoon — a sure sign that the postseason is here for the Nittany Lions.
On Monday evening Penn State’s wrestlers saw their potential path toward a Big Ten title as the conference released the preseeds.
Nothing is official until the Big Ten’s 14 head coaches meet on Friday. The tournament starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday and ends Sunday evening at the University of Maryland.
The Nittany Lions earned five No. 1 preseeds with no one ranked outside of the top six of their weights.
Beau Bartlett (141 pounds), Levi Haines (157), Carter Starocci (174), Aaron Brooks (197) and Greg Kerkvliet (285) are those No. 1 grapplers. Mitchell Mesenbrink (165) nearly made it six, but he is No. 2 behind Wisconsin’s Dean Hamiti.
Bernie Truax (184) is the only other wrestler in the top three at No. 3. Tyler Kasak (149) came in at No. 4. Braeden Davis (No. 6, 125) and Aaron Nagao (No. 5, 133) round out the seedings.
Starocci’s status remains in doubt, but coach Cael Sanderson said he’s ready to “search and destroy” on Monday afternoon.
