HS roundup: Here’s what happened from April 7-11 in Centre County high school sports

BASEBALL
State College: State College beat Chambersburg 6-3 on Thursday. Brady Bendik had a strong performance on the mound, allowing two runs and striking out four over five innings. Ryan Terrizzi closed out the game, allowing no earned runs and striking out two over two innings.
BEA vs Penns Valley: Bald Eagle Area topped Penns Valley 3-1 on Friday. Noah Williamson earned the win for the Eagles, allowing two hits and striking out 10. Williamson also went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Wyatt McClain, Ryan Kresovich and Kahale Burns each had RBIs as a part of the Eagles’ six-hit effort.
State College: State College lost 5-4 to Mifflin County on Friday. The two teams were tied 4-4 heading into the seventh inning. A single off the bat of Colby Bodtorf scored Cole Knable, giving the Huskies the win. Ethan Schimony led the Little Lions offensively, going 3-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Matt Lingenfelter took the loss for the Little Lions.
P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola beat Clearfield 11-1 in five innings on Friday to improve to 4-0. Ryan Whitehead led the Mounties’ 15-hit effort, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Gavin Emigh and Jake DeSimone each also knocked in two RBIs. Nick Coudriet picked up the win for the Mounties, giving up four hits and a run and striking out six over four innings. T.J. Wildman closed out the game.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte beat DuBois 16-10 on Friday. Max Rogers went 3-for-6 for the Red Raiders with five RBIs and a run scored. Zach Swagner, Seth Shuey, and Trevor Johnson each knocked in a pair of RBIs. Gavin Fravel earned the win for the Red Raiders, allowing 12 hits and seven runs, striking out one, over five innings. Dylan Dann closed out the game, giving up two hits and three runs while striking out three over two innings.
Competitive spirit
State College: State College finished in fifth place in the coed division at the 2021 PIAA Competitive Spirit Championships on Saturday with 72.30 points. McDowell was the winner with 89.47 points.
LACROSSE
State College girls: State College lost to Hershey 19-8 on Thursday night behind Katana Nelson’s seven goals and one assist. Leah Moyer scored three goals for the Little Lions, while Lizzie Paterno had two goals and two assists, Sydney O’Donnell had two goals, Ariana Angus had a goal and Grace Jones had seven saves. State College moves to 3-1 on the season.
Bellefonte girls: Bellefonte lost 16-5 to Indiana on Thursday.
SOFTBALL
Penns Valley: Penns Valley defeated Southern Huntingdon 11-2 in a home nonconference game on Wednesday. Rams’ winning pitcher Allie O’Brien secured seven strikeouts and only two walks. The Rams combined for 12 hits and batted 12-for-29 (.414).
P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola beat Huntingdon 16-5 on Thursday, behind a big day from Karissa Taylor. Taylor hit a grand slam to get things going for the Mounties on offense, while also picking up the win in the circle.
Penns Valley vs BEA: A big fifth inning helped Bald Eagle Area softball come from behind and top Penns Valley, 10-5, on Thursday. Trailing 4-1, the Eagles scored nine runs in the fifth inning, including junior Katelyn Smitchko’s first varsity home run and a two-RBI double off the bat of senior Kylie Swartz, to take the lead. Kailen Winkelblech homered for the Rams, and Jordan Anderson led the team in RBIs with two. Madison Peters earned the win for the Eagles, giving up nine hits and striking out four. Avery Dinges took the loss, with one strikeout, four walks and two hit batters.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte beat Central 11-1 in five innings on Thursday. Lexi Rogers pitched the complete game for the Red Raiders, giving up one hit — a home run — and striking out eight. Rogers also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a home run, double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Tori Reichert also hit a home run, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Hanna Lauck was 2-for-3, with two RBIs and a run scored in the Red Raiders’ 13-hit effort.
BEA: Bald Eagle Area beat Mifflin County 11-1 in six innings on Friday. The Eagles overpowered the Huskies offensively, racking up 14 hits to Mifflin County’s two. Makena Baney and Mara Hockenberry led BEA’s offense, with three hits apiece, while Maegan King, Ava Stere and Madison Eckley each added two. Stere led the team in RBIs with three. Katelyn Smitchko picked up the win for the Eagles, striking out four over four innings.
P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola beat Chestnut Ridge 7-2 on Friday. Hannah Minarchick and London Cutler each hit two-runs home runs. Karissa Taylor earned the win for the Mounties.
BOYS’ TENNIS
State College: State College defeated Cedar Cliff 5-0 on Thursday to improve to 6-3. The Little Lions swept the singles matches (Daniel Xu(SC) def. CC 6-0, 3-6, 13-11; Josh Davis(SC) def. CC 6-3, 6-0; Matias Mostafa (SC) def. CC 6-4, 6-3) and both doubles matches (Matt Labosky/Austin Ehrensberger(SC) def. CC 6-2, 6-4; Jonathon Lin/Kueyoung Kim(SC) def. CC 6-3, 7-5).
Track & field
Bellefonte: Bellefonte hosted Selinsgrove on Saturday. Winning first place for the Red Raiders were: Austin Melius (1,600-meter run); Chase Ebeling (3,200-meter run); the boys’ 4x100-meter relay; the boys’ 4x800-meter relay; William Spratt (discus); William Brininger (javelin) and John Besch (shot put).
State College: State College competed in a tri-meet with Altoona and Harrisburg on Saturday. Winning first place overall for the Little Lions were: Carson Franks (100-meter dash); Eniayo Ogunranti (200-meter dash); Ryan Lindenberg (400-meter dash); Conrad Moore (high jump); Ian Dorefice (pole vault); Mitchell Maher (shot put); Casie Eifrig (400-meter dash); Amy Devan (800-meter run); Grace Morningstar (1,600-meter run); Marlee Kwasnica (3,200-meter run); girls’ 4x800-meter relay; Shannon Mullin (long jump); Sarah Neely (pole vault) and Megan Yerka (shot put).
BEA: Bald Eagle Area competed at the Bedford Giant Eagle Invitational on Saturday, along with 19 other teams. Top-five finishers for the Eagles were: Evertt Herr (fifth in high jump); Owen Irvin (third in long jump; second in triple jump); Kevin Taylor (third in pole vault); Zebulon Fry (second in javelin); Rachel Veneziano (third in the 300-meter hurdles); the girls’ 4x400-meter relay team (fourth); Sarah Holler (second in discus; fourth in javelin; second in shot put) and Katie Snyder (fifth in javelin).
Wrestling
PA Power Wrestling’s Redemption Dual: Bellefonte’s Jude Swisher and Bald Eagle Area’s Coen Bainey both participated in PA Power Wrestling’s Redemption Dual on Saturday at C3 Sports. State College’s Lance Urbas was also invited, but was unable to wrestle. Swisher beat Wyoming Seminary’s Dom Federici 12-3 in the folkstyle matchup, a week after losing to him in freestyle. Bainey lost 7-2 to Delaware Valley’s Zack Jacaruso, the state runnerup at 113 pounds in Class 3A.
