Here’s what happened in Centre County high school sports from April 14-18.
BASEBALL
Bellefonte vs. P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola held off Bellefonte, despite a late rally, for a 14-10 win on Wednesday. The Mounties lead 7-1 heading into the sixth inning. The Red Raiders knocked in seven runs in the top of the inning to take the lead, but P-O responded with seven runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to get back on top. Bellefonte scored two more runs in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough. Nathan Gustkey led the Mounties’ 14-hit effort, going 4-for-5, including a home run, and four RBIs. Jeremy Whitehead also hit a home run, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Ryan Whitehead was 3-for-4, while TJ Wildman had a pair of hits and three RBIs, and Parker White added two hits. Nick Capparelle led the Red Raiders offensively, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Seth Shuey was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Gavin Emigh was credited with the win, coming in relief for Ryan Whitehead, throwing two innings and throwing three strikeouts. Bellefonte relief pitcher Dylan Dann was credited with the loss. The Mounties improved to 5-0, while the Red Raiders dropped to 5-1.
Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 13-3 to Montoursville on Wednesday.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte defeated Clearfield 10-9 in Thursday’s home conference match thanks to a late-game flurry in which the Red Raiders scored a run in the sixth and seventh innings to just edge out the Bison. Max Rodgers led Bellefonte’s offense with three hits and three RBIs in five at-bats, while both Dylan Dann and Seth Shuey registered two hits. Senior Gavin Fravel was credited with the win and the Red Raiders moved to 6-1 on the year.
BEA: Bald Eagle Area lost to Central 10-4 in an away conference match on Thursday. Pitcher Noah Williamson was credited with the loss after his team surrendered six runs in the sixth inning and the Bald Eagles drop to 3-3 on the season. The top hitters for Bald Eagle Area were Williamson, who registered a double, Kyler Cunningham wo went 2-for-2, Hayden Vaughn who hit a double and had two RBIs, and Gavin Eckley who hit a double.
State College: State College beat Altoona 11-1 on Thursday. Matt Lingenfelter had a team-high four RBIs, while Jake Cooper and Ethan Schimony each added two. Brady Bendik picked up the win, allowing five hits and a run while striking out five over five innings.
P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola beat Bellwood-Antis 15-3 on Friday, only surrendering four hits. Dave Meersand went the distance for his first win.
BEA: Bald Eagle Area beat Somerset 15-3 on Saturday. Alex Gavlock had a team-high four RBIs, with a double and two singles. Noah Williamson had three RBIs with a home run and a single, Hayden Vaughn added two RBIs off a home run.
LACROSSE
State College girls: State College defeated Chambersburg 14-5 on Thursday and improve to 5-1 on the season. The Little Lions had a huge first half, and led 11-1 at the break. Sydney O’Donnell led the way with three goals and five draw controls, while Lizzie Paterno and Leah Moyer had two goals each. Both Anna Collins and Ariana Angus had three points for State College.
State College boys: State College beat Chambersburg 17-5 on Thursday.
Bellefonte girls: Bellefonte beat Midd-West 18-11 on Thursday.
State College girls: State College beat Danville 15-6 on Saturday.
State College boys: State College beat Franklin Regional 9-2 on Saturday to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Bellefonte boys: Bellefonte beat Mifflin County 15-1 on Friday to improve to 2-3.
SOFTBALL
Penns Valley vs. Saint Joseph’s: Penns Valley defeated Saint Joseph’s 15-0 through four innings on Wednesday in a home, non-conference match. Rams’ winning pitcher Avery Dinges recorded eight strikeouts while the WolfPacks’ losing pitcher Lizzie Weller threw six strikeouts and six walks. Penns Valley combined for 15 runs on 12 hits, as Kendra Bumgardner hit two singles and a home run to combine for four RBIs, Ellie Coursen hit two singles and had two RBIs, and Noelle Webb hit a double with two RBIs. The Rams improved to 5-2 on the season while the WolfPack dropped to 0-2.
BEA: Bald Eagle Area lost 5-1 to Williamsport on Thursday, its first defeat of the season. Madison Peters took the loss, allowing seven hits over six innings, striking out nine. Makena Baney and Mara Hockenberry each had a single.
Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s lost 15-0 to East Juniata in its first-ever home game on Friday at Hess Field. The WolfPack allowed two first-inning runs and an additional 13 runs from the third to fifth inning and drop to 0-3 on the season. Freshman Jordyn Rose was the bright spot for Saint Joseph’s as she went 2-for-2 at the plate.
BEA: Bald Eagle Area beat Tyrone 8-4 on Friday. Madison Peters picked up the win, allowing two runs over 4.2 innings. Katelyn Smitchko pitched 2.1 innings, also allowing two runs. Madison Eckley had a double and a single, and Madison Perry had two singles. Maegen King and Autumn Tobias each had a double.
Bellefonte vs. P-O: Bellefonte beat Philipsburg-Osceola 10-0 on Friday. Lexi Rogers struck out 15 in the win. Hayley Rimmey, MeKenna Port and Sara DeHaa each had a pair of hits for the Red Raiders, while Rimmey and DeHaas also had four RBIs.
BOYS’ TENNIS
State College: State College lost to Lower Dauphin 3-2 on Wednesday in an away match. The Little Lions were swept in the singles matches (Daniel Xu vs AJ Krasley, LD 6-2, 7-5; Josh Davis vs Derwin Merca, LD 6-1, 7-5; David Chong vs Brady Coonelly, LD 6-1, 6-4) but swept the Falcons in the doubles matches (Matt Labosky and Luke Shaha vs Joseph Goduto and Sean Murphy, SC 6-0, 6-0; Jerry Zhang and Matias Mostafa vs Zach McIntire and Jake McIntire, SC 3-6, 6-2, (10-5)).
State College: State College defeated Red Land 4-1 in an away match on Friday. The Little Lions won two singles matches (Josh Davis vs Vince Lardis, SC 6-3, 4-6, (11-9); Matt Labosky vs Nik Petrides, SC 6-4, 6-4) and swept the doubles matches (Jerry Zhang and Matias Mostafa vs Paul Garceas and Carlos Ramirez, SC 6-1, 6-0; Lucas Shaha and Andrew Field vs Trevin Reinhart and Billy Carlisle, SC 7-6(9), 6-3). State College moves to 7-5 on the season.
Track & field/cross country
Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s Clare Marsh won two events at the Lady Spartan/Wildcat Invitational on Friday in Latrobe to be named the meet’s MVP. She clocked a 15.81 in the 100-meter hurdles, and 46.76 in the 300-meter hurdles. Kathleen Simander was second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:24.00 and the boys’ 4x800-meter relay team was second with a time of 8:41.88.
State College: State College had a strong showing at the Jack Roddick High School Invitational at Shippensburg on Saturday. The Little Lions, competing against 92 other teams, won first place in eight different events. The boys’ team came in first with 87 points, while the girls’ were second with 52.5. Wining first place for the Little Lions were: Shannon Mullin (18-4 in long jump); Eniayo Ogunranti (personal-best time of 10.81 in the 100-meter dash); Sean Adams (personal-best 1:56.49 in the 800-meter run); Brady Bigger (4:16.62 in the 1,600-meter run); the boys’ 4x100-meter relay team (season-best 43.71); boys 4x400-meter relay team (3:26.33); the boys’ 4x800-meter relay team (7:58.23); and Conrad Moore (6-8 in the high jump).
State College: State College senior Brady Bigger was named the 2020-21 Gatorade Boys’ Cross Country Player of the Year on Thursday. Bigger is the first Little Lion to win that award for boys’ cross country, which recognizes high standards of academic achievement and character on and off the field, as well as athletic excellence. Bigger, the winner of the 2020 Class 3A individual state championship, the District 6 and Mid Penn championships, is now a finalist for the National Boys’ Cross Country Player of the Year award. That winner will be announced later this month.
Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s Clare Marsh clocked a pair of top-two performances on Saturday at the Jack Roddick High School Invitational at Shippensburg. She won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.23, and was second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.43.
Boys’ volleyball
State College: State College beat Central Dauphin East three sets to two (25-19; 25-18; 23-15; 18-25; 15-12) on Thursday.
