Here’s what happened in Centre County high school sports from April 28-May 2.
Baseball
SJCA: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 24-1 to East Juniata on Wednesday.
P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola lost 8-4 to Huntingdon on Wednesday. Jeremy Whitehead went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while TJ Wildman and Dave Meersand each also went 2-for-4. Nick Coudriet took the loss, surrendering three runs on five hits and striking out one over two innings.
State College: State College lost 12-1 to Red Land on Thursday. Alex Hlivia led the Little Lions in hits, going 2-for-3. Jake Cooper had one RBI. Four different pitchers took the mound for State College. Mack Meengs took the loss, surrendering six runs and striking out two over two innings.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte beat Huntingdon 11-8 on Friday. The two teams were tied after the third inning, then Huntingdon took a two-run lead in the top of the sixth. Bellefonte responded with five runs of its own, thanks to a Bobby Marsh triple, several walks, an error and a sacrifice fly from Trevor Johnson to score the game’s final run. Marsh went 2-for-4 — including a home run — and an RBI. Max Rogers was 2-for-3 with a team-high four RBIs. Derek Fravel started on the mound for the Red Raiders, allowing two runs on one hit and striking out three in one inning pitched. Gavin Fravel took over, surrendering six hits and six runs, striking out five over five innings to earn the win. Seth Shuey earned the save, allowing no hits and no runs while striking out three in the final inning.
State College: State College lost 5-4 to Tyrone on Friday. An RBI double from Alex Hlivia and a three-run homer from Nate Polo gave State College the 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning. The Little Lions held onto that lead all the way until the bottom of the sixth, when the Golden Eagles racked up five runs. Brady Bendik took the loss, pitching five and two-thirds innings for the Little Lions, allowing five runs on four hits and striking out four. Ryan Terrizzi threw one-third of an inning in relief.
SJCA vs. Penns Valley: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy beat Penns Valley 13-2 on Friday.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte lost 16-11 to Cathedral Prep on Saturday. Bats were hot for both teams as Cathedral Prep had 15 hits and Bellefonte 11. Max Rogers went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Seth Shuey went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Bobby Marsh, Trevor Johnson and David McAndrew each also had two RBIs. Bellefonte had five different pitchers take the mound. Marsh threw six strikeouts and Dylan Dann threw three.
Lacrosse
State College girls: State College beat Red Land 13-9 on Senior Day on Thursday. Phebe Herlocher led the Little Lions in scoring with four goals. Also scoring multiple were Lizzie Paterno (three goals, one assist, four draw controls), Leah Moyer (two goals, one assist) and Sydney O’Donnell (two goals, one assist and three draw controls). Grace Jones had six saves.
State College boys: State College beat Red Land 13-2 on Thursday. Branden Price, Aleksandar Mohoruk, Rocco Brugel and Jack Mccaughey each had two goals.
State College boys: State College beat Hershey 8-6 on Saturday.
Softball
State College: State College beat Red Land 4-1 on Wednesday. Zia Bodnar earned the win, surrendering one run on three hits and striking out 10 over seven innings. Logan Soltis led the Little Lions on offense, going 2-for-4. Tori Kroboth and Olivia Herncane each had RBI doubles.
SJCA: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 15-10 to Moshannon Valley on Friday.
State College: State College lost 11-7 to Chambersburg on Friday. State College scored first, thanks to a two-run homer from Olivia Herncane. But Chambersburg took the lead, 4-2, in the bottom of the first inning and never relinquished it, despite a State College rally in the seventh. Herncane homered again in the seventh, scoring three runs to give the Little Lions a chance to come back, but it wasn’t enough. Herncane ended the game 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Zia Bodnar took the loss, surrendering 11 hits and 11 runs, striking out four.
Penns Valley: Penns Valley split a doubleheader with Tyrone on Saturday. Tyrone took the first game 6-5, then Penns Valley rebounded for a 14-8 victory. Allie O’Brien led the offense in Game 1, with a home run, two singles, an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Avery Dinges had a single and a double, an RBI and two runs scored, and Kendra Bumgardner had a single and a team-high two RBIs. Bumgardner took the loss, but struck out 12 and walked two in the effort. O’Brien earned the win in Game 2, striking out seven and walking one. O’Brien also hit another home run, to add to a single, for four RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Scotty Dinges also had four RBIs, with a double, single, two runs scored and a stolen base. Noelle Webb had a team-high three hits — two singles and a double — two RBIs and two runs scored.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte shut out Hollidaysburg with identical 10-0 scores in two five-inning games in a Saturday doubleheader. Sara DeHaas led the offense in Game 1, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Maddie Tice and Hanna Lauck each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Lexi Rogers picked up the win, allowing two hits and no runs, striking out 10 and walking one. Madison Melius and Maddie Tice each went 3-for-3 with two RBIs in Game 2. Tori Reicher went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Sophomore Josselyn Nau picked up the win, allowing three hits and no runs, striking out three.
Track & field
BEA: The Bald Eagle Area girls’ scored 79 points to beat Huntingdon Area (69) and Southern Huntingdon (41), while the boys’ team also scored 79 points to beat Huntingdon Area (39) and Southern Huntingdon (71) on Saturday. Winning first place overall for the Eagles were: the boys’ 4x800-meter relay team A; Rachel Veneziano (100-meter hurdles; 100-meter dash; 300-meter hurdles); Max Yetsko (100-meter hurdles); the boys’ 4x100-meter relay team; the girls’ 4x400-meter relay; Abigail Hoover (discus; javelin); Sarah Holler (shot put); Angelina Grieb (high jump); Zebulon Fry (javelin); Owen Irvin (long jump; triple jump) and Kevin Taylor (pole vault).
