Here’s what happened in Centre County high school sports from May 5-9.
baseball
BEA: Bald Eagle Area beat Central 17-13 in a high-scoring affair on Thursday. McGwire Heverly hit a grand slam for the Eagles, finishing with five RBIs. Kyler Cunningham went 4-for-5 with three doubles and two RBIs. Kahale Burns went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, Ryan Kresovich went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Noah Williamson went 2-for-3. Wyatt McClain earned the win, surrendering four hits and seven runs, striking out four and walking four over five innings.
P-O vs. Penns Valley: Philipsburg-Osceola beat Penns Valley 3-0 on Thursday, behind pitcher David Meersand’s first varsity no-hitter. Meersand struck out seven and walked one over seven innings. P-O had five hits, with Nick Coudriet going 2-for-2.
State College: State College lost 3-0 to Cumberland Valley on Saturday. Ryan Terrizzi was credited with the loss, allowing just three hits and three runs, striking out four and walking four over five innings. Brady Bendik pitched the final two innings, giving up two hits and no runs, striking out two and walking one. Nate Polo, Alex Hlivia, Charlie Bakken and Ethan Schimony each had a hit.
SJCA: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy beat Saint John Neumann High School 2-0 on Saturday. Pitcher Evan Roach threw the first no-hitter in program history.
BEA: Bald Eagle Area beat Mount Union 10-5 on Saturday. Mount Union got out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Eagles responded with six runs of their own after two outs in the top of the second. Wyatt Coakley was credited with the win, surrendering 10 hits and five runs while striking out four and walking one over five innings. Noah Williamson pitched two innings, giving up no hits, while striking out two and walking one. Williamson went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs. Kyler Cunningham hit a two-run homer. MCGwire Heverly had two doubles and three RBIs, Gavin Eckley went 2-for-4 and Kahale Burns went 2-for4 with a double.
lacrosse
State College girls: State College beat Lower Dauphin 16-7 on Thursday, outscoring Lower Dauphin 9-2 in the second half. Sydney O’Donnell led the offense with five goals, one assist and three draw controls. Lizzie Paterno had three goals, one assist and six draw controls, and Leah Moyer had three goals and five draw controls. Grace Jones had eight saves.
State College boys: State College beat Lower Dauphin 9-8 in a back-and-forth game on Thursday. Zack Paterno made a crucial save as time expired to secure the victory.
Bellefonte girls: Bellefonte lost 13-2 at Lewisburg on Friday.
Bellefonte boys: Bellefonte beat Danville 12-11 on Friday.
softball
Bellefonte: Bellefonte shut out Central 11-0 on Wednesday. Lexi Rogers earned the win, allowing one hit and no runs, striking out six. Sara DeHaas, Lily Gardner and Makenna Port each had home runs. Rogers and Maddie Tice each went 3-for-3.
P-O vs. Penns Valley: Philipsburg-Osceola beat Penns Valley 8-6 on Thursday. P-O took an early 5-0 lead in the first inning, a lead Penns Valley was never able to overcome. Karissa Taylor earned the win, with seven strikeouts, six walks and two hit batters. Kendra Bumgardner took the loss, with eight strikeouts, three walks and one hit batter. Hannah Minarchick hit a three-run homer for the Mounties. Allie O’Brien had a home run for the Rams, to go with a run scored, RBI and a stolen base. P-O ended the game with eight runs, five hits and two errors, and Penns Valley had six runs, five hits and five errors.
BEA: Bald Eagle Area beat Central 10-2 on Thursday, handing coach Don Lucas his 300th career coaching win. Madison Peters earned the win, allowing five hits, striking out five and walking none. Ava Steere and Maddie Perry each had three hits to lead the Eagles’ offense.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte erased a three-run deficit to beat Clearfield 7-3 on Thursday. Lexi Rogers was credited with the win, allowing nine hits and three runs, striking out 11 and walking three. Lily Gardner led the offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs. Rogers had a team-high two RBIs to go along with two hits and a run.
State College: State College beat Cumberland Valley 5-3 on Thursday. The game was tied at 3 in the bottom of the sixth, when Zia Bodnar drove in a run on a double to take the lead. Bodnar was credited with the win, allowing five hits and three runs, while striking out 10 and walking none over seven innings. Olivia McTavish, Olivia Herncane and Tori Kroboth each had two hits.
track & field
Mt. Lion Classic Class 2A: Bald Eagle Area, Penns Valley, Philipsburg-Osceola and Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy competed against other Class 2A teams at the Mt. Lion Track & Field Classic on Saturday in Altoona. On the girls’ side, Saint Joe’s finished fifth with 42 points, Penns Valley was seventh with 38.50, BEA was 13th with 21.50 and P-O 23rd with 8. The Penns Valley boys’ team placed ninth with 27 points, Saint Joe’s was 10th with 26, P-O was 14th with 20.50 and BEA was 15th with 16. Finishing in first place were: Penns Valley’s Colton Sands (800-meter run; 1,600-meter run); Saint Joe’s Kathleen Simander (800-meter run); Penns Valley’s Kelsey Hull (1,600-meter run; 3,200-meter run) and Saint Joe’s Clare Marsh (100-meter hurdles; 300-meter hurdles). Marsh broke a Class 2A meet record with her time of 15.10 in the 100 hurdles, and brought home the award for the PIAA Class 2A Outstanding Girls’ Performer.
Mt. Lion Classic Class 3A: State College competed against 13 other Class 3A teams at the Mt. Lion Track & Field Classic on Saturday in Altoona. The boys’ team placed first with 149.50 points, while the girls’ were second with 109 points, one point behind Altoona’s 110. Finishing in first place for the Little Lions were: Eniayo Ogunranti (100-meter dash); Carson Franks (200-meter dash); Sean Adams (800-meter run); Brady Bigger (3,200-meter run); the boys’ 4x100-meter relay; the boys’ 4x800-meter relay; Conrad Moore (high jump); Ian Dorefice (pole vault); Jordan Reed (3,200-meter run); the girls’ 4x800-meter relay and Victoria Sodeinde (pole vault). Bigger broke a Class 3A meet record with his time of 9:21.50 in the 3,200.
Wrestling
Women’s Nationals: Bald Eagle Area junior Grace Stem made her first Cadet World Team on Saturday at the 2021 Women’s Nationals in Irving, Texas. Competing in the 65 kilogram women’s freestyle bracket, Stem beat her opponents 10-0, 13-2, 10-6 and 11-0 to reach the best-of-three finals, where she took care of Missouri’s Maddie Kubicki in two bouts (6-2, 4-3). Stem will represent Team USA at the United World Wrestling Cadet World Championships in Budapest in July. Stem also competed in the Junior Women’s division at 62 kg, where she placed seventh.
