Recognizing the class of 2020

School districts across Centre County had their academic years cut short in March, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced school closures and remote learning. For seniors, it also meant the loss of milestone moments and months to make memories with classmates. The Centre Daily Times recognizes and congratulates the resilient class of 2020.

The members of the Penns Valley Area School District Class of 2020 weren’t able to have a class picture taken, or have a traditional graduation ceremony, but there are plenty of things the coronavirus didn’t take away.

The class’s many accomplishments are part of what makes it so special, high school Principal Dustin Dalton. Those accomplishments will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday during a combined virtual and in-person ceremony.

Students will be given a time to walk across the stage in three-minute intervals and may invite two vehicles to attend the ceremony. While not an “ideal ceremony,” Dalton said when announcing the plans, they’re grateful for the chance to congratulate the class of 2020 in person.

The event will be livestreamed and posted online following the ceremony, along with speeches from the class president, valedictorians and school officials.

What makes the Penns Valley Class of 2020 special?

Dustin Dalton, high school principal: The class of 2020 is nothing short of a spectacular group of young adults. As individuals, they are some of the most driven people you will ever meet. As a group, they are among the most accomplished. For example, this class holds an academic decathlon individual champion, 15 Centre Ready career-certified individuals, four valedictorians, three CPI National honor society members, 21 National Honors Society members, four district band members, one regional band qualifier, three district chorus members, and the 2019 CDT Summit Award for the best athletic program in the Mountain League. Of the 94 graduates, 22 of them are CPI trained and ready to enter the workforce or further their skills in a postsecondary training. Three of them are headed to the military, and 80 of them are venturing to some form of postsecondary institution. It was truly a pleasure serving the class of 2020.
