Recognizing the class of 2020

School districts across Centre County had their academic years cut short in March, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced school closures and remote learning. For seniors, it also meant the loss of milestone moments and months to make memories with classmates. The Centre Daily Times recognizes and congratulates the resilient class of 2020.

Philipsburg-Osceola Area School District Superintendent Gregg Paladina usually shares a message of perseverance with graduates, but said during a recorded speech this week that such a message isn’t necessary for the class of 2020.

“The class of 2020 needs no lesson in perseverance,” he said. “You’ve battled plenty already.”

Seniors and their families watched the speech — along with footage of graduates receiving their diplomas — on Tuesday during a socially distanced event at the 322 Drive-In in Clearfield County. While the graduates missed prom and the high school musical, Paladina said that the district hopes to return to those events, and hopes to involve the class of 2020.

“You’re always welcome at Philipsburg-Osceola and you are now forever part of our alumni,” he said.

What’s a cherished memory from the Class of 2020?

Class president Rachel Burger: I was lucky enough to have my lunches every year with some of my best friends, and all those 30-minute lunch periods full of laughter definitely add up.

What makes the class of 2020 special?

Teacher Stephen Torquato: The Class of 2020 is like none I have seen before. They are comprised of accomplished athletes, dedicated young scholars, talented musicians, and inspiring student leaders. Over the past four years my colleagues and I have been lucky enough to watch this class overcome obstacles time and time again. Their resilience through this pandemic is just another testament to their drive to succeed. I look forward to seeing all they accomplish in the years to come.
