A dog “running on borrowed time” was rescued after spending three days with a plastic cheese ball container on its head.

Now The Last Stop Animal Rescue and Sanctuary in Carleton, Michigan, is leading the recovery for the aptly named Cheeto.

The dog is believed to be a Great Pyrenees and German shepherd mix, according to the Detroit Free Press. He is likely 60 to 70 pounds underweight and is between 18 months to 2 years old.

The dog was first spotted with the container on its head Friday, Oct. 6. A Facebook poster said the dog was “unapproachable and timid.”

Kim Broman Canales, who led the rescue of Cheeto, said the “jackpot sighting” of the dog came Sunday, Oct. 8. The dog had already been spotted several times roaming the area, unable to drink and eat because of the container on his head.

She said she noticed the direction he was traveling, then she hid behind a shed before sneaking up behind the dog and snatching him.

“There were tears of happiness shed,” Canales said in a Facebook post. “Some of these cases take a toll on your soul. The past 3 days have been extremely stressful worrying how this would end.”

The dog was taken to the animal rescue, owned by Tom and Sue Walsh. Hedge clippers were used to slice the container off the dog’s head, video shared on Facebook shows.

Cheeto, nicknamed that after several other names didn’t quite stick, was shown in the video quickly eating food and drinking water.

“He was probably right down to the wire,” Tom Walsh said in the video.

The Walshes have posted multiple videos a day chronicling Cheeto’s recovery. The rescuers are hoping to return the dog to its original owner, the Free Press reported.

The rescue is asking for donations to help cover the cost of Cheeto’s neutering, vaccines and flea medication. Donations can be sent to the nonprofit’s Paypal.

Carleton is about 30 miles southwest of Detroit.
