How much snow fell in Centre County during weekend winter storm? See the totals
A foot or more of snow fell across Centre County Sunday and early Monday, giving the area its most significant snowfall in five years.
Port Matilda saw 15.5 inches of snow, Unionville 14 inches and State College 13.1 inches by Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service. Many of the snowfall totals reported by the agency were over 14 hours old by that time, meaning accumulations in some places could be higher.
This weekend’s storm was among the most significant this decade. Dec. 17, 2020, brought more than 15 inches of snow to much of the county, and a February 2021 storm brought 14 inches to some areas.
The storm is poised to break the record for most snowfall recorded on Jan. 25 in State College, beating out the 8.5 inches recorded on Jan. 25, 1948. Philipsburg’s 1958 record of 10 recorded inches of snowfall is also poised to be broken.
The exact amount of snow this weekend’s winter storm dropped on Centre County is expected to come into focus in the coming days as the NWS aggregates data.
While this weekend’s storm apparently fell short of the 18-inch maximum snowfall some forecasters said was possible, it caused widespread disruptions in the area and gave school children a three-day weekend. Even some church services were cancelled as State College saw skiers and snowboarders take to the streets.
More snow is possible this week
Commercial weather services show a chance of snow showers throughout the week.
Tuesday, Jan. 27 has around a 15% chance of flurries throughout the county, without much accumulation expected as of noon Monday. The evening of Saturday, Jan. 31 and morning of Sunday, Feb. 1 each have about a 30% chance of snowfall, with some accumulation possible.
