My wife and I did our best impression of Ferdinand Magellan when we moved several years ago to Bellefonte by setting out to find the area’s best offerings of American classics.

Locating quality hamburgers, ice cream and pizza was at the top of our to-do list. Finding a shop that sold good sandwiches was something that happened naturally along the journey.

The area has standouts in particular categories, but we’ve yet to find one with a set of options stronger than what you’ll find at Twin Kiss Restaurant.

I know that when owner Tylor Yarrison advertises the restaurant’s Gooney Burger a text from my wife suggesting we make the about 10-minute drive to 2495 N. Eagle Valley Road is about to follow.

My most frequent order is a cheesesteak on a steamed roll that’s served alongside fresh-cut fries. We rarely leave without ordering either soft serve or hand-dipped ice cream.

The Policeman cheesesteak — which comes with grilled green peppers and onions, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato and oil — is the restaurant’s bestseller.

Another favorite is the TK Vet Burger, which sees a portion of its sales donated to an organization that supports veterans. Most items on the menu cost less than $10.

Perhaps the strongest seal of approval comes from our toddler. The boy that’s offered a borderline gluttonous amount of food that only occasionally makes it into his stomach even eats there.

You can sit in the recently remodeled dining area or any number of the restaurant’s outdoor seats, ideal for young kids that like to run around or if you’d like to bring man’s best friend.

Yarrison, 26, is in her seventh year of either owning or working at the restaurant. The Howard native took over as owner when she was 22.

Behind her is a set of employees that largely aren’t old enough to drink yet. Some are high schoolers, while others are college students who return home to work a summer job.

Yarrison refers to all of them as her “kids,” especially the ones that enjoy talking to their boss through Snapchat. The ones that regularly say “bet” — a slang term for some version of “all right,” “sure,” or “OK” — confuse her sometimes.

But the team at Twin Kiss comes together to serve good food at a reasonable price in a family-friendly environment. You could go there weekly during the summer and not repeat a meal, but who can fault you if you develop a go-to order?

“I don’t know if I want something hot or something cold,” one customer said Friday before placing their order.

Therein lies the beauty of Twin Kiss. You can’t go wrong.

Twin Kiss is open noon until 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, as well as Sunday. It’s open 2-9 p.m. Saturday. You can follow the restaurant on Facebook and Instagram.
