Restaurants, retail and more: Here’s what businesses closed this year in Centre County

The coronavirus and subsequent mitigation efforts forced many Centre County businesses to close this year. Though some business owners decided to shut down before the pandemic began, nearly all of them cited financial challenges as the reason why.

More than a dozen local businesses closed in the last 12 months. Though some relocated to other parts of the county, at least eight Nittany Mall storefronts shuttered this year. The majority of business closures were restaurants in the State College area.

Since April, more than 100 Pennsylvania businesses have announced plans to close or permanently layoff workers, according to state records.

Mike’s Wood Grill and Bar, formerly known as Luna 2, was the first Centre County business to close and cite COVID-19 as the reason. Owner Bill McFadden told the CDT that challenges presented by the coronavirus were the “proverbial nail in the coffin.”

A Bellefonte co-working space followed; owner Ellen Matis said the pandemic and restrictions played a role in her decision to close.

But some business owners were forced to close for reasons unrelated to the pandemic. Hall’s Market in Snow Shoe announced it would not reopen after the damage from a fire was too costly to repair.
